{{nihongo|Yoshizumi Ishino|石野 良純|Ishino Yoshizumi|}} is a Japanese molecular biologist, known for discovering the DNA sequence of Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR).
Biography
Ishino was born in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. He received his BS, MS and PhD in 1981, 1983 and 1986, respectively, from Osaka University.[http://astrobiology.illinois.edu/network/ishino Yoshizumi Ishino | astrobiology.illinois.edu] {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150930141339/http://astrobiology.illinois.edu/network/ishino |date=September 30, 2015 }} From 1987 to 1989, he served as a post-doctoral fellow in Dieter Söll's laboratory at Yale University.{{cite web|url=https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Yoshizumi_Ishino|title=Yoshizumi Ishino - Ph D - Kyushu University, Fukuoka - Kyudai - Graduate School of Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Sciences|first1=Yoshizumi IshinoKyushu University |last1=Bioresource|first2=Bioenvironmental Sciences 43 19 · Ph|last2=D|website=Researchgate.net|access-date=29 October 2018}}
In 2002, he became a professor at Kyushu University.{{cite web |url=https://kaken.nii.ac.jp/d/r/30346837.ja.html |title=Kaken - 石野 良純(30346837) |website=kaken.nii.ac.jp |access-date=3 February 2022 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20150929161221/https://kaken.nii.ac.jp/d/r/30346837.ja.html |archive-date=29 September 2015 |url-status=dead}}{{Cite web|url=https://astrobiology.illinois.edu/network/yoshizumi-ishino|title=Yoshizumi Ishino|website=astrobiology.illinois.edu|language=en|access-date=2018-12-02}} Since October 2013, he has been a member of the NASA Astrobiology Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.{{cite web|url=http://hyoka.ofc.kyushu-u.ac.jp/search/details/K001659/society.html|title=九州大学-研究者情報 [石野 良純 (教授) 農学研究院 生命機能科学部門]|website=Hyoka.ofc.kyushu-u.ac.jp|access-date=29 October 2018}}
After completing his PhD, Ishino became senior research scientist at the Bioproducts Development Center of Takara Shuzo. Later in life, he joined BERI (Biomolecular Engineering Research Institute), in which he conducted research on nucleic acids-related enzymes.
Research contribution
Ishino has contributed to the development of enzymology and nucleic acids research in his life. The "iap" gene in gut microbe E. coli was sequenced by Ishino and his colleagues in 1987.{{Cite web|url=https://www.quantamagazine.org/crispr-natural-history-in-bacteria-20150206/|title=CRISPR Natural History in Bacteria|website=Quanta Magazine|date=6 February 2015 |access-date=2019-04-01}} As the DNA segment used was longer than the gene itself, they accidentally discovered a partial DNA sequence of then-unnamed CRISPR in the process,{{cite journal |vauthors=Ishino Y, Shinagawa H, Makino K, Amemura M, Nakata A |title=Nucleotide sequence of the iap gene, responsible for alkaline phosphatase isozyme conversion in Escherichia coli, and identification of the gene product |journal=J Bacteriol |volume=169 |issue=12 |pages=5429–33 |year=1987 |pmid=3316184 |pmc=213968|doi=10.1128/jb.169.12.5429-5433.1987 }} which would eventually become the basis of CRISPR gene editing. Ishino was one of the first scientists to have detected CRISPRs in E. coli.{{Cite journal|last1=Forterre|first1=Patrick|last2=Krupovic|first2=Mart|last3=Ishino|first3=Yoshizumi|date=2018-04-01|title=History of CRISPR-Cas from Encounter with a Mysterious Repeated Sequence to Genome Editing Technology|journal=Journal of Bacteriology|language=en|volume=200|issue=7|pages=e00580–17|doi=10.1128/JB.00580-17|issn=0021-9193|pmid=29358495|pmc=5847661}} In 1990, Ishino began researching DNA replication of micro-organisms in the Archaea domain.{{Cite web|url=https://www.targethealth.com/post/dr-yoshizumi-ishino-crispr|title=Dr. Yoshizumi Ishino - CRISPR {{!}} Feb 11, 2019|website=www.targethealth.com|access-date=2019-04-01}}
