Composition and lyrics

The song was written by Henry Counsell and Alfie Russel, and produced by Russel and Joy Anonymous when the song was originally released in 2020.

Edwards' version contains additional rewriting by her, with inspiration based on a prior conversation Edwards had with her fiancΓ© English footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain when they first started dating in November 2016. She recalled telling him she would not pressure him into committing to her and suggested they both focus on their own paths first and see what happens next.{{cite web |title=Perrie explains surprising meaning behind 'You Go Your Way' lyrics |url=https://www.capitalfm.com/news/music/perrie-you-go-your-way-lyrics-alex-oxlade-chamberlain/ |access-date=2024-10-04 |website=Capital |language=en}}
