Youth Speaks Hawaii
Youth Speaks Hawaii (YSH) is a program of Hawai'i nonprofit Pacific Tongues, an offshoot of Youth Speaks. Founded in January 2005, YSH runs weekly workshops with mentors from throughout the Hawaii poetry slam community, and special guest mentors, which are open for all interested students to write, read, and discuss poetry and performance.
Since its creation Youth Speaks Hawaii has participated in the Brave New Voices competition by sending a team of up to six poets to each event. In the 2007 Brave New Voices championship, held in San Jose, California, YSH placed 7th among the 35 teams.{{cite web|url=http://www.poorwettree.com/Home/youth-speaks-hawaii|title=Youth Speaks Hawaii |publisher=Poor Wet Tree|access-date=2009-08-10}} Preceding the 2008 event, held in Washington, D.C., YSH was chosen as one of the teams featured in HBO's series "Russell Simmons Presents: Brave New Voices." Hawaii finished first in that year's event, the eleventh and largest to date.{{cite news|url=http://archives.starbulletin.com/2008/08/24/features/story01.html|title=Flowing to first: Hawaii's winning poetry crew attracts the attention of HBO|last=Chun|first=Gary C.W.|date=24 August 2008|work=Star Bulletin (Honolulu)|access-date=2009-08-10}}{{cite news|url=http://archives.starbulletin.com/2008/08/24/features/story02.html|title=Young poets go with flow: A Hawaii teams wows a mainland audience to win the Brave New Voices international competition|last=Chun|first=Gary C.W. |date=24 August 2008|work=Star Bulletin (Honolulu)|access-date=2009-08-10}} The following year at the event held in Chicago, Illinois, with a total of 50 teams competing, Hawaii repeated as champions.{{cite news|url=http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20090721/NEWS01/907210330/Young+Hawai+i+poets+are+winners |title=Young Hawaii poets are winners |last=Duenas |first=Ashlee |date=21 July 2009 |work=Honolulu Advertiser |access-date=2009-08-10 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090724085253/http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20090721/NEWS01/907210330/Young+Hawai+i+poets+are+winners |archive-date=July 24, 2009 }}
