Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah ({{langx|ar|يوسف بن علوي بن عبد الله}}, born 1945) is an Omani politician. He was the Sultanate of Oman's Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs. It is important to clarify that "Ministers in Responsibility" were previously appointed as the Sultan was intended to hold the official position of "Minister of Foreign Affairs" himself.{{cite web|title=Eye On Stability|url=https://www.thebusinessyear.com/oman-2015/eye-on-stability/interview|website=The Business Year|access-date=23 August 2017}}{{Cite web|url=https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-oman-government-idUKKCN25E1PY|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200819195006/https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-oman-government-idUKKCN25E1PY|url-status=dead|archive-date=August 19, 2020|title=Oman transfers powers from Sultan's remit in government revamp|date=August 18, 2020|via=uk.reuters.com}}

Early life

Yusuf bin Alawi studied and worked in Kuwait. In 1970 he met Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said for the first time, shortly after his take-over. Alawi had been a dissident and associated with a Dhofar secession movement against the current Sultan's father.{{cite book|last1=Valeri|first1=Marc|title=Oman: Politics and Society in the Qaboos State|date=2009|publisher=Hurst|isbn=9781850659334|page=60|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=MKzlyho2KQkC&q=Musallim+%22bin+Nufl%22+dhofar+oman&pg=PA58|access-date=23 August 2017|language=en}} However, once Sultan Qaboos acceded power, he encouraged Omani dissidents to come out of overseas exile and assist in the rebuilding of Oman.{{cite book|last1=Peterson|first1=J. Alawi has recently met with the US Secretary of State in Washington to discuss ways to better engage Iran. Oman is unusual among Arab states of the Persian Gulf in that it has a long history of cordial relations with Tehran, something Washington is keen to make use of in resolving a number of regional security issues.{{cite web|title=Omani foreign minister meets Tillerson as Washington seeks channel to Tehran|url=https://www.thenational.ae/world/mena/omani-foreign-minister-meets-tillerson-as-washington-seeks-channel-to-tehran-1.612952|website=The National|access-date=23 August 2017|language=en}}{{cite web|title=Remarks With Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah Before Their Meeting|url=https://www.state.gov/secretary/remarks/2017/07/272774.htm|website=U.S. Department of State|access-date=23 August 2017}}{{cite book|last1=Maddy-Weitzman|first1=Bruce|title=Middle East Contemporary Survey|date=2002|publisher=The Moshe Dayan Center|isbn=9789652240491|page=101|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=zs57d0logH8C&q=%22Yusuf+bin+Alawi%22+dissident+Oman&pg=PA101|language=en}}

Canada-Omani relations

In September 2016, Oman played an important role in securing the release of Homa Hoodfar, an Iranian-Canadian citizen and professor at Concordia University. She had been held prisoner in Iran's Evin Prison since 6 June 2016. This happened soon after a secretive meeting between Canada's prime minister, Justin Trudeau, and Alawi.{{cite news|url=http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-oman-hoodfar-release-1.3779967|title=Private meeting at UN between Trudeau team and Omani officials led to Hoodfar's release by Iran|last = Cochrane|first=David|date=26 September 2016|publisher=CBC News|access-date=26 September 2016}}

Hacking

In 2019, it was revealed that Yusuf bin Alawi had been targeted by Project Raven; a UAE clandestine surveillance and hacking operation targeting other governments, militants and human rights activists critical of the UAE monarchy. Using a "sophisticated spying tool called Karma", they managed to hack a device belonging to Yusuf bin Alawi.[https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-spying-karma/ UAE used cyber super-weapon to spy on Iphones of foes], by Joel Schectman and Christopher Bing, January 30, 2019, Reuters[https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-spying-raven/ Inside the UAE’s secret hacking team of American mercenaries], by Christopher Bing and Joel Schectman, January 30, 2019, Reuters
