Maynard attended Grimsley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he led his team to a Metro League title as a senior in 2007. He committed to Buffalo to play for coach Turner Gill.
College career

Maynard began his college career as the backup quarterback to Drew Willy, and saw limited action during the Bulls 2008 season, culminating with the team's 2008 MAC championship, and an appearance in the 2009 International Bowl. For the 2009 season, Maynard took over for Willy as the team's starting quarterback and led the Bulls to a 5–7 record.{{cite news|url=http://www.buffalonews.com/Maynardaposs_gamble_pays_dividends_Had_he_stayed_at_UB_he_might_have_become_the_best_ever_to_take_snaps_from_center.html|title=Maynard's gamble pays dividends|date=May 20, 2011|agency=The Buffalo News|author=Wilson, Allen|access-date=December 6, 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151207041040/http://www.buffalonews.com/Maynardaposs_gamble_pays_dividends_Had_he_stayed_at_UB_he_might_have_become_the_best_ever_to_take_snaps_from_center.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=December 7, 2015}} During a 54–27 loss to Pittsburgh in the second week of the season, Maynard threw for 400 yards and 4 touchdowns.{{cite news|url=http://www.buffalonews.com/UBaposs_Maynard_leaving_little_doubt_he_can_play______His_final_numbers_were_remarkable_enough_to_make_one_think_a_second_straight_MAC_championship_might_be_attainable..html|title=UB's Maynard leaving little doubt he can play|date=September 13, 2009|agency=The Buffalo News|author=DiCesare, Bob|access-date=December 6, 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151207040724/http://www.buffalonews.com/UBaposs_Maynard_leaving_little_doubt_he_can_play______His_final_numbers_were_remarkable_enough_to_make_one_think_a_second_straight_MAC_championship_might_be_attainable..html|url-status=dead|archive-date=December 7, 2015}} During the 2009 season, Maynard accounted for 2,994 yards of total offense, the second highest single-season total in Buffalo football history.{{cite news|url=http://www.buffalonews.com/MACaposs_quarterbacking_legacy_is_in_good_hands_______The_situation_demanded_Maynard_put_his_stamp_on_a_come-from-behind_victory_and_show_his_teammates_heaposs_confident..html|title=MAC's quarterbacking legacy is in good hands|date=October 18, 2009|agency=The Buffalo News|author=DiCesare, Bob|access-date=December 6, 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151207041434/http://www.buffalonews.com/MACaposs_quarterbacking_legacy_is_in_good_hands_______The_situation_demanded_Maynard_put_his_stamp_on_a_come-from-behind_victory_and_show_his_teammates_heaposs_confident..html|url-status=dead|archive-date=December 7, 2015}}{{cite news|url=http://www.buffalonews.com/Maynard_calls_an_audible__Gillaposs_departure_said_to_affect_QBaposs_decision_to_leave_UB.html|title=Maynard calls an audible|date=January 22, 2010|agency=The Buffalo News|author=DiCesare, Bob|access-date=December 6, 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151207041628/http://www.buffalonews.com/Maynard_calls_an_audible__Gillaposs_departure_said_to_affect_QBaposs_decision_to_leave_UB.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=December 7, 2015}}
