Zygi ({{langx|el|Ζύγι}}; {{langx|tr|Terazi}}) is a small village on the south coast of Cyprus, between Limassol and Larnaca. Before 1974, Zygi had a mixed Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot population.{{cite web|title=ZYGI|url=http://www.prio-cyprus-displacement.net/default.asp?id=391|website=Internal Displacement in Cyprus|publisher=PRIO Cyprus Centre|access-date=4 November 2014}}

Explosion

The Evangelos Florakis Navy Base explosion of 11 July 2011 damaged every house in the village.

Refugee centre controversy

In 2018, the village was the site of protests supported by anti-immigrant party ELAM and members of the local council against the building of a centre for unaccompanied refugee children.{{Cite web|url=https://cyprus-mail.com/2018/11/06/outraged-zygi-residents-halt-work-on-unaccompanied-minors-centre/|title = Outraged Zygi residents halt work on unaccompanied minors centre | Cyprus Mail}}{{Cite web|orig-date=3.8.2018|title=Τα ορφανά του Ζυγιού και η ανθρωπιά που χάθηκε|url=http://politis.com.cy/article/ta-orfana-tou-zigiou-ke-i-anthropia-pou-chathike|website=Politis.com| last = Kωσtantinoy| first = Kωσtaσ}} Other residents disputed the protest.{{Cite web|url=http://knews.kathimerini.com.cy/en/news/zygi-community-divided-over-refugee-facility|title=Zygi divided over refugee facility}}

This controversy led to some Cypriots calling for a boycott of the village, which is famous for its taverns. Notably, a trip to the village by a nearby school was cancelled, after students refused to go, as they considered that their immigrant classmates would not be welcome.{{cite web| title ="Μαθητές αρνήθηκαν να μεταβούν σε εκδρομή στο Ζύγι" (English: Students refused to go on an excursion to Zygi) | url = http://politis.com.cy/article/mathites-arnithikan-na-metavoun-se-ekdromi-sto-zigi|website = politis.com| lang = Greek}}

Tourism in the village

Thanks to the village's proximity to cities popular among tourists (about half an hour's drive from Larnaca and Limassol) and the multitude of attractions for vacationers and sailing enthusiasts, the village is a hub for bustling tourism.{{Cite web |last=קפריסין |first=צוות אתר |date=2023-06-04 |title=כפר הדייגים ומרינת זיגי {{!}} Zygi |url=https://cyprus.co.il/zygi/ |access-date=2023-07-05 |website=קפריסין 2023 |language=he-IL}}

The well-known village boasts a popular fishing harbor and a famous marina that has recently been established and is already widely used by tourists.{{Cite web |title=Zygi Marina - Cyprus |url=https://www.skippers.co.il/listing/zygi-marina-cyprus/ |access-date=2023-07-05 |website=SKIPPERS |language=he-IL}}
