The Kuwait Metropolitan Rapid Transit System Project was a plan to build a rapid transit network in Kuwait. The project, which had been in the planning stages since the 2000's, was officially cancelled in 2023 due to a lack of funds.{{Cite web |date=2007-12-24 |title=دشتي لـ الأنباء انتهاء دراسة مشروع المترو وعروض المناقصات له تطرح فبراير المقبل |trans-title=Dashti to Al-Anba: The study of the metro project has been completed and tenders for it will be offered next February |url=https://www.alanba.com.kw/20873 |access-date=2024-03-17 |website=Al-Anba |language=ar-kw}}{{Cite web |date=2023-11-14 |title=Financial burdens leading to cancellation of Kuwait Metro |url=https://www.arabtimesonline.com/news/financial-burdens-leading-to-cancellation-of-kuwait-metro/ |access-date=2024-03-17 |website=Arab Times |language=en}}
History
The project was supposed to have been implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP) under the management of the Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP),{{Cite web|title=KAPP - Kuwait Metropolitan Rapid Transit System (KMRT)|url=https://www.dmsprojects.net/kuwait/projects/kapp-kuwait-metropolitan-rapid-transit-system-kmrt/PRJ00016983|website=DMS Projects}}{{Cite web|title=Kuwait Metropolitan Rapid Transit System (KMRT)|url=http://www.kapp.gov.kw/en/Kuwait-Metropolitan-Rapid-Transit-System-(KMRT)|year=2021|website=Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP)|access-date=2020-09-29|archive-date=2020-08-20|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200820004711/http://www.kapp.gov.kw/en/Kuwait-Metropolitan-Rapid-Transit-System-(KMRT)|url-status=dead}} where the government would have owned 10% of the project and raised 50% of the funds through an initial public offer. The remaining 40% would have been held by the private developer.
In 2023, the Supreme Committee of the KAPP decided to cancel the Kuwait Metro project. This decision, ratified by the Authority's Board of Directors and endorsed by Amiri Diwan, was prompted by the project's substantial administrative and financial burdens on public funds, amounting to {{Currency|2.152 million|KWD}}, as highlighted by the Audit Bureau.{{Cite web |last=Qasim |first=Ali |date=2023-11-13 |title=إلغاء «مترو الكويت» يكبّد المال العام 2.15 مليون دينار |trans-title=Canceling the Kuwait Metro costs public money 2.15 million dinars |url=https://www.alraimedia.com/article/1665254/%D8%A7%D9%82%D8%AA%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%AF/%D8%A5%D9%84%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D9%85%D8%AA%D8%B1%D9%88-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%83%D9%88%D9%8A%D8%AA-%D9%8A%D9%83%D8%A8%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%84-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D8%A7%D9%85-215-%D9%85%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%AF%D9%8A%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%B1 |access-date=2024-03-17 |website=Al Rai |language=ar}}
