In Hindu temple architecture, Ardhamandapa (lit. half-open hall), also spelled artha mandapam or ardh mandapam, is an important element of the entrance group. It is an entrance porch forming a transitional area between the outside and a mandapa of the temple.{{cite book |last1=Allen |first1=Margaret Prosser |title=Ornament in Indian Architecture |date=1991 |publisher=University of Delaware Press |isbn=9780874133998 |page=127 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=vyXxEX5PQH8C&q=Ardhamandapa+indian+temple&pg=PA113 |accessdate=28 June 2019 |language=en}}{{cite web |title=A Visual Glossary of Hindu Architecture |url=https://brewminate.com/a-visual-glossary-of-hindu-architecture/ |publisher=brewminate.com |accessdate=28 June 2019 |date=2 January 2017}}

Overview

Ardhamandapa is usually an open—to provide light and air—four-pillared pavilion in front of the entrance door of mandapa of the temple. If the temple mandapa has three entrance doors, there have to be three such porches, one on each side. Ardhamandapas usually resemble mandapas in design and carving.{{cite web |title=Ardhamandapa |url=http://blessingsonthenet.com/indianculture/section/articles/512/ardhamandapa |publisher=blessingsonthenet.com |accessdate=28 June 2019}} Most Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist temples feature various transitional spaces between the central shrine (garbhagriha) and the outside world, but only the largest, most developed temples offer the full set of these elements: ardhamandapa, mandapa, and mahamandapa, with the first being the lowest.{{cite web |last1=Harshananda |first1=Swami |title=Ardha-maṇḍapa |url=http://www.hindupedia.com/en/Ardha-ma%E1%B9%87%E1%B8%8Dapa |accessdate=28 June 2019}}{{cite web |title=Khajuraho Architecture |url=https://personal.carthage.edu/jlochtefeld/picturepages/Khajuraho/architecture.html |publisher=Carthage College |accessdate=28 June 2019 |archive-date=24 June 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160624124607/https://personal.carthage.edu/jlochtefeld/picturepages/Khajuraho/architecture.html |url-status=dead }}{{cite web |title=francofrescura.co.za {{!}} Architecture {{!}} A glossary of southern african architectural terms |url=https://www.sahistory.org.za/franco/glossary-indic-terms.html |website=www.sahistory.org.za |accessdate=28 June 2019}}{{cite web |last1=Cartwright | first=Mark | title=Hindu Architecture | url=https://www.worldhistory.org/Hindu_Architecture/ | publisher=World History Encyclopedia | accessdate=28 June 2019 | date=4 September 2015}}
