arthroscopic lavage

Arthroscopic lavage is the washing out or cleaning out the contents (blood, fluid or loose debris) inside a joint space. Lavage is a general term referring to the therapeutic washing, cleaning or rinsing.{{Cite web|url=https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lavage|title=Definition of LAVAGE|website=www.merriam-webster.com}}

Medical uses

Excessive growth of irritated synovial membrane causes it to increase its surface area by buckling into fronds, and the fronds may become inflamed and pour destructive enzymes into the joint space, causing joint swelling and joint surface destruction. Removing this excess material via lavage frequently resolves arthritic knee inflammation or pain.{{Cite web|url=http://www.nice.org.uk/IPG230|title = Overview | Arthroscopic knee washout, with or without debridement, for the treatment of osteoarthritis | Guidance | NICE| date=22 August 2007 }}

Arthroscopic lavage is one of many procedures available to help reverse the damage of early arthritis. There is, however, controversy about the value of simple lavage and debridement for the older patient with established osteoarthritis.{{cite journal|last1=Reichenbach|first1=S|last2=Rutjes|first2=AW|last3=Nüesch|first3=E|last4=Trelle|first4=S|last5=Jüni|first5=P|title=Joint lavage for osteoarthritis of the knee.|journal=The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews|date=12 May 2010|issue=5|pages=CD007320|pmid=20464751|doi=10.1002/14651858.CD007320.pub2|url=http://boris.unibe.ch/1181/1/Reichenbach%20CochraneDatabaseSystRev%202010.pdf}}

Needle lavage should not be used in an attempt to treat persons seeking long-term relief for symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee.{{Citation |author1 = American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons |author1-link = American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons |date = February 2013 |title = Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question |publisher = American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons |work = Choosing Wisely: an initiative of the ABIM Foundation |url = http://www.choosingwisely.org/doctor-patient-lists/american-academy-of-orthopaedic-surgeons/ |access-date = 19 May 2013}}, which cites
