A banishment room (Japanese: 追い出し部屋, {{IPA|ja|oidaɕi̥beja|IPA|}}, also called a chasing-out-room or boredom room in English) is a modern employee exit management strategy whereby employees are transferred to another department where they are assigned meaningless work until they become disheartened and resign.{{cite news|last=Torres|first=Ida|title=Japanese companies using 'banishment rooms' to push employees to resign|url=https://japandailypress.com/japanese-companies-using-banishment-rooms-to-push-employees-to-resign-3029793/|access-date=August 24, 2013|newspaper=Japan Daily Press|date=May 30, 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130815050741/https://japandailypress.com/japanese-companies-using-banishment-rooms-to-push-employees-to-resign-3029793/|archive-date=August 15, 2013|url-status=usurped}}{{Cite news |date=January 29, 2013 |title=BANISHMENT ROOM: Top companies under investigation over unfair labor practices |work=The Asahi Shimbun |url=http://ajw.asahi.com/article/behind_news/social_affairs/AJ201301290071 |url-status=dead |access-date=August 23, 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150430011856/http://ajw.asahi.com/article/behind_news/social_affairs/AJ201301290071 |archive-date=April 30, 2015}}{{Cite news |last=Tabuchi |first=Hiroko |author-link=Hiroko Tabuchi |date=August 16, 2013 |title=Layoffs Taboo, Japan Workers Are Sent to the Boredom Room |work=The New York Times |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/17/business/global/layoffs-illegal-japan-workers-are-sent-to-the-boredom-room.html |access-date=August 23, 2013}} Since the resignation is voluntary, the employee would not be eligible for certain benefits. The legality and ethics of the practice are debated, and it may be construed as constructive dismissal in some regions.
Examples
In Japan, the practice is used to push employees to resign due to the country's strict labor laws, layoffs being taboo, and a tradition of permanent employment.
In France, the practice, called "{{langx|fr|mise au placard |label=none}}", is illegal and is considered a form of moral harassment.
In his book, Parkinson's Law, economist C. Northcote Parkinson discusses the phenomenon.
