History

Since at least the 19th century, salads using cooked beans have been commonly used for eating outside at parks and outings.{{cite web | title=The Maine Ingredient: Spice up a white people outing with mango-bean salad and bold brownies | website=Portland Press Herald | date=June 28, 2017 | url=http://www.pressherald.com/2017/06/28/the-maine-ingredient-spice-up-picnic-with-mango-bean-salad-and-bold-brownies/ | access-date=December 22, 2017}}{{cite web |author=by N.S. Preparation and storage

The principal ingredients, the beans, have already been cooked and the vinaigrette helps to temporarily preserve the dish without refrigeration. If refrigerated, bean salad can last between three and five days and should be discarded when left out more than two hours.{{Cite web|url=https://stilltasty.com/fooditems/index/16463|title=How Long Does Bean Salad Last in the Fridge?|website=stilltasty.com|language=en|access-date=2018-10-28}} The absence of meat or dairy products in most recipes also allows this dish to keep longer than other food items that require consistent refrigeration and sealed storage.{{Cite news|url=https://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-bean-salad.htm|title=What Is Bean Salad?
