A blook is a printed book that contains or is based on content from a blog.
The first printed blook was User Interface Design for Programmers, by Joel Spolsky, published by Apress on June 26, 2001, based on his blog Joel on Software.{{Citation needed|date=June 2010}} An early blook was written by Tony Pierce in 2002 when he compiled selected posts from his one-year-old blog and turned the collection into a book called Blook.{{cite web |url=http://tonypierce.com/blog/2002_11_03_blogarc.htm |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20080517182557/http://www.tonypierce.com/blog/2002_11_03_blogarc.htm |archivedate=17 May 2008 |title=tonypierce.com + bushblog |website=tony pierce dot com |accessdate=23 February 2014}} The name came about when Pierce held a contest, asking his readers to suggest a title for the book. Jeff Jarvis of BuzzMachine won the contest and subsequently invented the term.{{cite web |url=http://www.buzzmachine.com/archives/2002_12_21.html#002759 |title=Posts from December 21, 2002 |date=21 December 2002 |website=BuzzMachine |accessdate=18 January 2014 |first=Jeff |last=Jarvis}} Pierce went on to publish two other blooks, How To Blog and Stiff.
Print-on-demand publisher Lulu inaugurated the Lulu Blooker Prize for blooks, which was first awarded in 2006.{{cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2006/apr/03/news.newmedia1|title=From blog to book: first awards for online writers who became mainstream successes|last=Gibson|first=Owen|work=The Guardian|date=3 April 2006|accessdate=16 November 2015}} The printed blook phenomenon is not limited to self-publishing. Several popular bloggers have signed book deals with major publishers to write books based on their blogs. However, some publishers are starting to realize that blog popularity does not translate to sales. Blog to book conversions via traditional publishing houses still happen, but the focus has shifted from blog popularity to content quality.{{cite web |url=http://www.amny.com/entertainment/am-blogbook1211,0,5596105,full.story |title=The sharp rise (and quick fall) of the bloggers' books |date=11 December 2007 |first=Kara |last=Warner |website=am New York |archivedate=11 May 2008 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20080511213548/http://www.amny.com/entertainment/am-blogbook1211%2C0%2C5596105%2Cfull.story |accessdate=18 January 2014 |url-status=dead }}
"Blook" was short-listed in 2006 for inclusion in the Oxford English Dictionary and was a runner-up for Word of the Year.{{cite web |url=http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/news/archives/2006/10/12/bovvered_wins_word_of_the_year_award.html/ |title='Bovvered' wins Word of the Year award |website=The Guardian |first=Sarah |last=Phillips |date=12 October 2006 |archivedate=10 June 2013 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130610210543/http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/blog/2006/oct/12/bovveredwinsw1 |accessdate=18 January 2014}}
