Cardinal gems are gemstones which have traditionally been considered precious above all others. The five traditional cardinal gems are:

• amethyst (purple) – Rare and precious in the Old World until large deposits were found in Brazil.
• diamond (transparent)
• emerald (green)
• ruby (red)
• sapphire (blue)
