Cider doughnut season coincides with the harvest season for apples, beginning in September and lasting through November or December. According to Food & Wine, "year-round" cider doughnuts are likely to suffer from a lack of fresh-pressed cider and are best bought fresh, before they dry out.{{Cite web |last=Callaghan |first=Adam H. |date=2024-10-01 |title=A State-by-State Guide to New England’s Best Apple Cider Doughnuts |url=https://www.foodandwine.com/cider-doughnuts-new-england-8716201 |access-date=2024-10-28 |website=Food & Wine |language=en}}{{Cite news |last=Bonisteel |first=Sara |date=2024-10-17 |title=It’s Soft Pretzel and Cider Doughnut Season |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/17/dining/apple-cider-doughnuts-pumpkins-pretzels.html |access-date=2024-10-27 |work=The New York Times}} The doughnuts are sold in grocery stores as early as August and have also been offered as a seasonal item at Dunkin' Donuts.{{Cite web |last=Berg |first=Ted |title=I tried and ranked apple-cider doughnuts from Wegmans, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's. History
Cider doughnuts date back as far as the late nineteenth century; a 1901 article in The Buffalo Enquirer references them served at Halloween parties.{{Cite web |last=Greco |first=Karen |date=2022-10-21 |title=The Unexpectedly Modern History Of The Apple Cider Donut |url=https://www.tastingtable.com/1064649/the-unexpectedly-modern-history-of-the-apple-cider-donut/ |access-date=2024-10-28 |website=Tasting Table |language=en-US}} Doughnuts had long been associated with the autumn harvest season in the United States because animal slaughters would elicit surplus fat for frying.{{Cite news |last=Tracey |first=Sara |date=2022-09-21 |title=On the trail of the cider doughnut origin story in the Capital Region |url=https://www.timesunion.com/food/article/Tracing-the-cider-doughnut-history-in-the-Capital-17451678.php |access-date=2024-10-27 |work=Albany Times-Union}} The confection likely evolved with Adolph Levitt's 1921 invention of an doughnut-making machine which allowed producers to methodically fry circles of batter in oil. Controversies
