Clortermine (Voranil) was developed by Ciba in the 1960s{{ cite patent | country = US | status = patent | number = 3415937 | title = The Suppression of Appetite with 1-(o-Chlorophenyl)-2-Methyl-2-Propylamine }} and is an anorectic drug of the amphetamine class.{{cite book | vauthors = Triggle DJ | title = Dictionary of Pharmacological Agents | publisher = Chapman & Hall / CRC | location = Boca Raton | year = 1996 | isbn = 0-412-46630-9 }} It is the 2-chloro analogue of the better known appetite suppressant phentermine, and is the 2-chloro positional isomer of chlorphentermine. Clortermine produces very low rates of self-administration in animals similarly to chlorphentermine,{{cite journal | vauthors = Sannerud CA, Brady JV, Griffiths RR | title = Self-injection in baboons of amphetamines and related designer drugs | journal = NIDA Research Monograph | volume = 94 | pages = 30–42 | year = 1989 | pmid = 2514366 }} and as a result it likely does not act on dopamine. Instead, it may act as a serotonin and/or norepinephrine releasing agent.{{Citation needed|date=April 2010}}
