A coin set, or mint set, is a collection of uncirculated or proof coins, released by a mint. Such sets are usually released annually and often called a year set. They include sets of all the circulating coins of that year, as well as sets of commemorative coins.

Mint sets

The Royal Mint, Royal Australian Mint, Royal Canadian Mint, United States Mint and others mints all release sets of proof and uncirculated coins each year.{{cite web|url=http://colnect.com/en/coins/mints/distribution/9-Year_Set|title=Mints issuing year sets|publisher=Colnect|accessdate=December 9, 2015}}

Occasionally the coins for annual mint sets are struck with special coin dies. For example, the Danmarks Nationalbank issues a coin set each year with coins that are "much more clearly embossed than the ordinary coins in circulation."{{cite web|title=Danish coins|url=http://www.nationalbanken.dk/en/banknotes_and_coins/Danish_coins/Pages/Default.aspx|publisher=Danmarks Nationalbank|accessdate=21 October 2015|archive-date=27 October 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151027045810/http://www.nationalbanken.dk/en/banknotes_and_coins/Danish_coins/Pages/Default.aspx|url-status=live}}

Early coin sets were issued in paper or cardboard folders which often led to toning, due to the sulphur content of the card.{{cite web|title=1952 Uncirculated Mint Set|date=20 September 2011 |url=http://mintsetguide.com/1952-mint-set/|accessdate=20 October 2015|archive-date=29 July 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150729130003/http://mintsetguide.com/1952-mint-set/|url-status=live}}

Coin collector sets

The Numismatic Guaranty Company allows coin collectors to build coin sets with graded coins. Collectors post images on their web site.{{cite web |title=NGC Registry |url=https://www.ngccoin.com/registry/ |website=NGC Coin |publisher=Numismatic Guaranty Company |access-date=13 September 2023 |archive-date=22 August 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230822083546/https://www.ngccoin.com/registry/ |url-status=live }} Many collectors collect coins which fill a coin set. There are coins in each series or set which are known as key date coins. They are valued by collectors because they are needed to complete coin sets.{{cite news |last1=Reynolds |first1=Greg |title=Classic U.S. Coins – Key Date Coins for Less Than $2,500 – Part 1: Copper |url=https://coinweek.com/classic-u-s-coins-key-date-coins-for-less-than-2500-part-1-copper/ |access-date=12 September 2023 |publisher=Coin Week |date=22 April 2015 |archive-date=29 May 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230529044941/https://coinweek.com/classic-u-s-coins-key-date-coins-for-less-than-2500-part-1-copper/ |url-status=live }}
