A compact newspaper is a broadsheet-quality newspaper printed in a tabloid format, especially one in the United Kingdom. The term as used for this size came into use after The Independent began producing a smaller format edition in 2003 for London's commuters, designed to be easier to read when using mass transit.{{cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/the-independent-launches-tabloid-version-to-give-readers-a-choice-581355.html|location=London|work=The Independent|date=27 September 2003|title='The Independent' launches tabloid version to give readers a choice|access-date=25 August 2018|archive-date=26 December 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191226221358/https://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/the-independent-launches-tabloid-version-to-give-readers-a-choice-581355.html|url-status=live}}
