Conchiglie ({{IPA|it|koŋˈkiʎʎe|lang}}) are a type of pasta. They are usually sold in the plain durum wheat variety, and also in colored varieties which use natural pigments, such as tomato extract, squid ink or spinach extract. The shell shape of the pasta allows the sauce to adhere to it. A miniature variety called conchigliette is also available. Conchiglie are claimed to have been traced back to southern Italy, where they were traditionally made using durum wheat semolina.{{Cite web |last=regitaef |date=2024-02-29 |title=What Is Sea Shell Pasta? |url=https://recipes.net/articles/what-is-sea-shell-pasta/ |access-date=2024-04-24 |website=Recipes.net |language=en}}

Etymology

The name derives from the Italian word for 'seashell', {{lang|it|conchiglia}}. The Italian word {{lang|it|conchiglie}} and the English word conch share the same Greek root in the form of {{lang|grc|κοχύλι}} ({{transliteration|grc|kochýli}}), meaning 'shell'.{{cite web|url=http://www.wordhippo.com/what-is/the/greek-word-for-ec122f54cf16a175b3e22979e240684f7734079a.html|title=What is the Greek word for shell?|website=WordHippo|accessdate=15 September 2018}}
