Cooling is removal of heat, usually resulting in a lower temperature and/or phase change. Temperature lowering achieved by any other means may also be called cooling.{{Cite web |title=cooling |url=https://dictionary.iifiir.org/index.php?inputLang=en&truncPos=right&srchTerm=cooling&outputLang=xx&defnLang=en&submit=View+results |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240412230654/https://dictionary.iifiir.org/index.php?inputLang=en&truncPos=right&srchTerm=cooling&outputLang=xx&defnLang=en&submit=View+results |archive-date=Apr 12, 2024 |website=International Dictionary of Refrigeration}}{{Cite web |title=cooling |url=https://terminology.ashrae.org/?term=cooling |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240412224827/https://terminology.ashrae.org/?term=cooling |archive-date=Apr 12, 2024 |website=ASHRAE Terminology}}
The transfer of thermal energy may occur via thermal radiation, heat conduction or convection. Examples can be as simple as reducing temperature of a coffee.
