The e Reuse Methodology (eRM) was the first reuse methodology to emerge in the Hardware Verification Language space and was used in conjunction with the e Hardware Verification Language. It was invented in 2001{{citation needed|date=June 2025}} by Verisity Design and released in 2002.{{cite web |last=Ball |first=Richard |url=https://www.electronicsweekly.com/news/archived/resources-archived/verisity-plan-for-reuse-2002-09/ |title=Verisity plan for reuse |work=Electronics Weekly |date=11 September 2002 |access-date=3 June 2025}}{{cite press release |url=https://www.design-reuse.com/news/202505052-verisity-announces-e-reuse-methodology-erm-for-reusable-high-quality-verification-component-development-erm-boosts-productivity-and-ensures-interoperability-for-all-evcs/ |title=Verisity Announces E Reuse Methodology 'eRM' for Reusable, High-quality, Verification Component Development; eRM Boosts Productivity and Ensures Interoperability for All eVCs |work=Verisity |date=9 September 2002 |access-date=3 June 2025 |via=Design And Reuse}} The methodology was composed of guidelines for topics such as:
- File naming conventions
- Functional partitioning of the testbench
- Code packaging Guidelines
- Sequence and message class libraries
The e Reuse Methodology was widely accepted by verification engineers and is the most widely used and successful reuse methodology with thousands of successful projects.{{fact|date=September 2011}}
eRM formed the basis of the URM (Universal Reuse Methodology) developed by Cadence Design Systems for the SystemVerilog verification language. URM, together with contribution from Mentor Graphics' AVM, later became the OVM (Open Verification Methodology), and eventually becoming the UVM (Universal Verification Methodology).{{cite book |last1=Rosenberg |first1=Sharon |last2=Meade |first2=Kathleen |url=https://www.google.com/books/edition/A_Practical_Guide_to_Adopting_the_Univer/EqwOBAAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&pg=PR22 |title=A Practical Guide to Adopting the Universal Verification Methodology (UVM) Second Edition |publisher=Lulu Press |pages=xxii–xxiii |date=2012 |access-date=3 June 2025 |isbn=978-1300535935}}
