Sateen is a fabric made using a satin weave structure but with spun yarn instead of filament yarn.{{cite dictionary |last=Tortora |first=Phyllis G. |title=Fairchild's Dictionary of Textiles 7th Edition |date=2005 |entry=Sateen |editor-last=Merkel |editor-first=Robert S. |dictionary=Fairchild's Dictionary of Textiles |edition=7th |location=New York |publisher=Fairchild Publications |page=490 |isbn=9780870057076 }} It is a cotton or other non-silk fabric that has the characteristics of silk satin but is less expensive.{{Cite book |last=Willard |first=Dana |title=Fabrics A to Z: The Essential Guide to Choosing and Using Fabric for Sewing |publisher=Stewart, Tabori & Chang |date=2011 |isbn=9781584799566 |location=New York, New York |page=43 }}
The dense weave, sheen, and softer feel of sateen are produced through the satin weave structure.{{Cite book |last=Langdon |first=Nancy |title=Singer: The Complete Photo Guide to Sewing |publisher=Quarto Publishing Group USA |date=2018 |isbn=9781589238978 |edition=3rd |location=Minneapolis, Minnesota |page=220 }} Standard plain weaves use a one-over, one-under structure. For a satin weave, warp yarns are floated over weft yarns, for example four over and one under (for a five-harness satin weave).{{Cite web |title=Satin Weaves |url=https://cottonworks.com/en/topics/sourcing-manufacturing/weaving/satin-weaves/ |access-date=July 4, 2023 |website=CottonWorks }} In a weft-faced satin or sateen, the weft yarns are floated over the warp yarns. This weave structure is prone to fraying and is less durable than plain weave fabrics.
Some sateen is mercerized, a chemical process that makes fibers softer, smoother, and more resilient.{{Cite book |title=The Mood Guide to Fabric and Fashion: The Essential Guide from the World's Most Famous Fabric Store |date=2015 |publisher=STC Craft |first=Melanie |last=Falick |isbn=978-1-61769-088-4 |editor-last=Gunn |editor-first=Tim |location=New York, New York |editor-last2=Miller |editor-first2=Johnny }}
Care
Unlike its silk counterpart, cotton sateen is easy to maintain since it is machine washable. It can also be air dried or tumble dried with minimal to moderate shrinkage. Sateen can wrinkle, but wrinkles can be ironed out easily using the cotton setting of an iron.{{Cite web |title=Sateen Fabric {{!}} Types of Cotton Fabric |url=https://thefabricofourlives.com/cotton-fabrics/sateen |access-date=2023-07-05 |website=Cotton |language=en-US}} For garments made of sateen, follow the recommended laundering instructions.
