floating canvas

{{short description|Part of a suit jacket or coat}}

In tailoring, a floating canvas is a fabric panel sewn inside the front of a suit jacket or coat. The floating canvas adds structure to the front panel of a jacket, and ensures that the jacket drapes properly and maintains its shape over time.{{cite web |last1=Shapira |first1=J.A. |title=How To Tell A Quality Suit: Fused Vs. The horsehair is used on the weft, and the other fabric on the warp. The floating canvas is loosely handstitched in place between the outer jacket fabric and the inner lining.{{cite web | url=https://blacklapel.com/thecompass/anatomy-of-a-suit-jacket-fused-vs-canvassed/ | title = Suiting 101: An Introduction to Suit Jacket Construction |website=The Compass: A Style Journal by Black Lapel |publisher=blacklapel.com | access-date = 2017-10-04 |date=2013-02-21}} The stitch used to secure floating canvas is called a pad stitch.{{Cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IatcT84AuME |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/varchive/youtube/20211217/IatcT84AuME |archive-date=2021-12-17 |url-status=live|title=Actual Tailor Explains Pad Stitching for Perfect Collars & Lapels {{!}} Barbara of Royal Black Couture|last=Banner|first=Bernadette|date=2020-03-04|website=YouTube}}{{cbignore}}

A half canvas is a floating canvas that reaches from the shoulder seam and lapel to halfway down the chest. A half canvas is often supplemented with fusible interfacing that provides structure to the remainder of the jacket front. Fusible (or glued) interlinings are considered to be of lower quality than their canvassed counterparts, since the interlining can separate from the main fabric, causing unsightly bubbling.{{Cite news|url=https://www.wsj.com/amp/articles/cheap-suits-get-a-high-fashion-upgrade-1509190332|title = Cheap Suits Get a High-Fashion Upgrade|newspaper = Wall Street Journal|date = 28 October 2017|last1 = Smith|first1 = Ray A.}}{{Cite magazine|url=https://www.newyorker.com/business/currency/the-suit-that-couldnt-be-copied|title=The Suit That Couldn't be Copied|magazine=The New Yorker |date=11 July 2016 |last1=Sharma |first1=Akhil }}
