Gardevoir ({{IPAc-en|audio=Gardevoir Voice Line.ogg|ˈ|ɡ|ɑː|ɹ|d|ə|v|w|ɑː|ɹ|}}), known in Japan as {{nihongo|Sirnight|サーナイト|Sānaito|lead=yes}}, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. First introduced in the video games Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, the development team wanted to push the concept of what a Pokémon could look like compared to previous installments. After the design was conceived, it was finalized by Ken Sugimori, who added additional details as he felt necessary. Since Gardevoir's debut, it has appeared in multiple games including Pokémon Go and the Pokémon Trading Card Game, as well as various merchandise. In media related to the franchise, Gardevoir has been voiced by various voice actors, including Michelle Knotz and Kei Shindō.
Originally classified as solely a Psychic-type Pokémon, Gardevoir has a white and green body with green hair in the shape of a bobcut, and pink horn protruding from its chest and back. It has a figure resembling a flowing dress, creating a feminine appearance. With Pokémon X and Y, it was reclassified as a Psychic- and Fairy-type Pokémon, and also gained a Mega Evolution, Mega Gardevoir.
Gardevoir has been well received since its debut, and regarded as one of the franchise's best designs, though some have criticized its appearance for being too similar to a human woman. Despite being a gendered species, it has come to be regarded by many as typically female by the Pokémon fandom, who have produced a large number of fan works related to the character illustrating its popularity. Many of these are of erotic nature, with unlicensed games using it in a similar capacity. In response, several media outlets and studies have either expressed their dismay at Gardevoir's association with such works, or attempted to analyze the reasons for it.
Conception and development
Gardevoir is a species of fictional creatures called Pokémon created for the Pokémon media franchise. Developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, the Japanese franchise began in 1996 with the video games Pokémon Red and Green for the Game Boy, which were later released in North America as Pokémon Red and Blue in 1998.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2016/12/25/pok-233-mon-red-amp-blue-a-look-back-at-the-20-year-journey-to-catch-em-all.aspx |title=Pokémon Red & Blue – A Look Back At The 20-Year Journey To Catch 'Em All |magazine=Game Informer |last=Hilliard |first=Kyle |date=December 25, 2016 |access-date=January 22, 2024 |archive-date=October 1, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231001192920/https://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2016/12/25/pok-233-mon-red-amp-blue-a-look-back-at-the-20-year-journey-to-catch-em-all.aspx |url-status=live }} In these games and their sequels, the player assumes the role of a Trainer whose goal is to capture and use the creatures' special abilities to combat other Pokémon. Some Pokémon can transform into stronger species through a process called evolution via various means, such as exposure to specific items. Each Pokémon have one or two elemental types, which define its advantages and disadvantages when battling other Pokémon.{{cite book |title=Pokémon Deluxe Essential Handbook |date=July 28, 2015 |publisher=Scholastic Inc. |page=5 |isbn=9780545795661}} A major goal in each game is to complete the Pokédex, a comprehensive Pokémon encyclopedia, by capturing, evolving, and trading with other Trainers to obtain individuals from all Pokémon species.{{cite book |title=Millennial Monsters: Japanese Toys and the Global Imagination |first=Anne |last=Allison |date=May 2006 |publisher=University of California Press |isbn=9780520938991 |pages=192–197}}
When designing the 2002 sequels Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Game Freak initially wanted to not include any of the Pokémon from the previous games, with lead artist Ken Sugimori using this as an opportunity push the concept of what a Pokémon could look like. To this end, he wanted to try more "humanoid" designs, but also wanted to emphasize "cooler" designs, due to feedback the team had received that Pokémon was seen as too "babyish". Additionally, while the previous Pokémon Gold and Silver were bound to simplistic designs for the sake of the related anime and toy manufacturing, Sugimori stated in an interview he said "screw it" and focused on more complex and fleshed out designs with these games. As the art team developed the Pokémon species, Sugimori would finalize their work and draw the promotional art, altering details as he felt necessary.{{cite magazine |magazine=Nintendo Dream |language=Japanese |pages=117–126 |title=ポケットモンスター ルビー・サファイア 大ヒット記念 ロングインタビュー |issue=84 |date=February 2003}} In Japanese the species is called Sirnight in reference to its protective nature. Introduced in Ruby and Sapphire, Gardevoir is the third and final part of the species' evolution line. Starting as the Pokémon Ralts which evolves into Kirlia once it has obtained enough experience points, Kirlia in turn can evolve into Gardevoir through the same means. Gardevoir stands 5 ft 3 in (160 cm) tall and appears as a slender, bipedal creature with red eyes and a mostly white body, save for its green arms and shoulders. The green hair atop its head extends behind its neck and ends in an angled point between its eyes, right above its mouth, while white spiked protrusions extend from the sides of its face. Its skin extends to form a gown shape with a green interior over its legs, and a red horn extends from the center of both its chest and back.{{cite book |publisher=Prima Games |page=129 |title=Pokémon Emerald Version |first=Levi |last=Buchanan |date=2005 |isbn=9780761551072}} A "shiny" variation of Gardevoir also exists with similar colorings and design, with the green on its body and hair replaced with teal.{{cite web |url=https://bleedingcool.com/games/pokemon-tcg-japans-shiny-treasure-ex-shiny-gardevoir-ex/ |title=Pokémon TCG Japan's Shiny Treasure Ex: Shiny Gardevoir Ex |date=2023-11-12 |accessdate=2024-09-14 |website=Bleeding Cool |first=Theo |last=Dwyer |archive-date=September 14, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240914132018/https://bleedingcool.com/games/pokemon-tcg-japans-shiny-treasure-ex-shiny-gardevoir-ex/ |url-status=live }} Despite having a feminine appearance, Gardevoir is a gendered species and subjects of it can either be male or female.
When introduced in Ruby and Sapphire, Gardevoir was originally classified as a Psychic-type Pokémon. With the later games Pokémon X and Y it gained a secondary typing, now classified as a Psychic- and the newly-added Fairy-type Pokémon.{{cite web |url=https://sea.ign.com/pokemon-y-version/65385/news/20-changes-that-make-pokemon-x-y-totally-rad |title=20 Changes that Make Pokemon X & Y Totally Rad |website=IGN |last=Khan |first=Calvin |date=October 19, 2013 |accessdate=October 4, 2024 |archive-date=October 6, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241006232140/https://sea.ign.com/pokemon-y-version/65385/news/20-changes-that-make-pokemon-x-y-totally-rad |url-status=live }} X and Y also introduced Mega Evolutions that allow certain Pokémon to temporarily transform through the use of in-game items, with Gardevoir being able to transform into Mega Gardevoir.{{Cite web |date=2020-04-29 |first=James |last=Plafke|title=Pokémon X and Y: How to get every Mega Evolution |url=https://mashable.com/article/pokemon-x-and-y-how-to-get-every-mega-evolution |access-date=2024-07-06 |website=Mashable |language=en |archive-date=March 16, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240316172651/https://mashable.com/article/pokemon-x-and-y-how-to-get-every-mega-evolution |url-status=live }} In this state the lower part of its body now resembles a ball gown with white sleeve-like extensions covering its arms. Cian Maher in an article for TheGamer both praised and disliked Gardevoir. Gardevoir's feminine humanoid design has led the fandom to heavily sexualize the species through fan works and discussions.{{cite web |url=https://kotaku.com/pokemon-official-forums-moderation-ban-rules-nintendo-1850605719 |website=Kotaku |date=2023-07-05 |accessdate=2023-09-30 |title=New Official Pokémon Forums Are A Disaster You Can't Look Away From |last=Shephard |first=Kenneth |archive-date=October 2, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231002054826/https://kotaku.com/pokemon-official-forums-moderation-ban-rules-nintendo-1850605719 |url-status=live }} Searches for pornography of the species have been prominent on sites such as Pornhub,{{cite web |website=Eurogamer |title=Overwatch, Pokémon dominated Pornhub's most popular game characters of 2017 |url=https://www.eurogamer.net/overwatch-pokemon-dominate-pornhubs-most-popular-game-characters-list-in-2017 |first=Tom |last=Phillips |date=2018-01-10 |accessdate=2023-09-01 |archive-date=October 2, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231002054826/https://www.eurogamer.net/overwatch-pokemon-dominate-pornhubs-most-popular-game-characters-list-in-2017 |url-status=live }} while a June 2023 study of such content on Rule 34 websites such as Rule 34.xxx and Sankaku Channel noted a high volume of material compared to characters from other franchises, and the second highest of characters from the Pokémon franchise as a whole.{{cite web |url=https://automaton-media.com/en/news/20230707-19983/ |title=Japanese users rattled by results of "The top 100 most "pornified" media franchises" ranking |last=V |first=Amber |date=2023-07-07 |accessdate=2023-09-30 |website=Automaton |archive-date=August 15, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230815062235/https://automaton-media.com/en/news/20230707-19983/ |url-status=live }} An interviewee for Vice attributed this particular popularity to its more "human" and "pretty" feminine design, something they felt Pokémon games prior to Ruby and Sapphire lacked.{{cite web |url=https://www.vice.com/en/article/pokemon-porn-exists-if-you-gotta-smash-em-all/ |website=Vice |title=Pokémon Porn Exists If You Gotta Smash 'Em All |first=Richard |last=Greenhill |date=2018-12-19 |access-date=2023-09-30 |archive-date=May 4, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230504142803/https://www.vice.com/en/article/a3m8vk/pokemon-porn-exists-if-you-gotta-smash-em-all |url-status=live }}
Third-party companies have also utilized its design in unlicensed erotic games, often incorporating sexualized aspects to the design.{{cite journal |last1=Passmore |first1=Cale |first2=Sabine |last2=Harrer |first3=Katta |last3=Spiel |title=Between Pleasure and Power: Game Design Patterns In Clickbait Ludoporn |journal=DiGRA 2020: The 13th Digital Games Research Association Conference: Play Everywhere |year=2020 |url=https://dl.digra.org/index.php/dl/article/download/1254/1254 |accessdate=2024-12-10 |archive-date=December 13, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241213211647/https://dl.digra.org/index.php/dl/article/download/1254/1254 |url-status=live }} This usage has led to some criticism, with Hideaki Fujiwara of Automaton arguing particularly that the character's portrayal in unlicensed mobile game Pocket Incoming served to "tarnish" the image of Pokémon as a franchise.{{cite web |date=2024-12-11 |url=https://automaton-media.com/articles/newsjp/pokemon-pocket-incoming-20241211-321408/ |script-title=ja:『ポケモン』を丸ごと盗用し自分勝手にセクシャル表現まで付け足す悪質ゲームに批判集まる。過去に一度消されたアプリが、ひそかに存続か |trans-title=A Malicious Game That Plagiarizes the Entirety of ``Pokémon’’ and Adds Sexual Content to It Is Drawing Criticism. Other outlets noted the fandom's heavy focus on sex appeal towards Gardevoir has led to fans of the species being reluctant to say so to avoid negative connotations. In particular, TheGamer{{'}}s Editor in Chief Stacey Henley voiced her displeasure, having taken a liking to the species due to seeing her own transgender identity reflected in Gardevoir's evolutionary line. Describing her initial reaction to Gardevoir as "the most beautiful Pokemon I had ever seen", she added that while she understood the sexual appeal of the species for some due to its humanoid shape and "motherly vibe" it had become "impossible to have a conversation about Gardevoir, or to try and look them up online, because everything else is drowned out in a sea of [...] questionable depictions of Garde." She was grateful that the games had chosen to emphasize a "pure [...] caring and nurturing" aspect of the species in games such as New Pokémon Snap as compared to the sexualized fan interpretations, adding "Gardevoir is one of Pokemon's brightest stars, and it's a shame that they’ve been tarnished like this."{{cite web |first=Stacey |last=Henley |title=New Pokemon Snap Reminded Me Why I Love Gardevoir |date=2021-05-07 |accessdate=2023-10-01 |website=TheGamer |url=https://www.thegamer.com/new-pokemon-snap-gardevoir/ |archive-date=August 5, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220805123639/https://www.thegamer.com/new-pokemon-snap-gardevoir/ |url-status=live }}
