A high-arched palate (also termed high-vaulted palate) is where the palate is unusually high and narrow. It is usually a congenital developmental feature that results from the failure of the palatal shelves to fuse correctly in development, the same phenomenon that leads to cleft palate.{{Cite journal|last1=Conley|first1=Zachary R.|last2=Hague|first2=Molly|last3=Kurosaka|first3=Hiroshi|last4=Dixon|first4=Jill|last5=Dixon|first5=Michael J.|last6=Trainor|first6=Paul A.|date=15 July 2016|title=A quantitative method for defining high-arched palate using the Tcof1(+/-) mutant mouse as a model|journal=Developmental Biology|volume=415|issue=2|pages=296–305|doi=10.1016/j.ydbio.2015.12.020|issn=1095-564X|pmc=4914414|pmid=26772999}} It may occur in isolation or in association with a number of conditions. It may also be an acquired condition caused by chronic thumb-sucking. A high-arched palate may result in a narrowed airway and sleep disordered breathing.{{cite book|author=Friedman M|title=Sleep Apnea and Snoring: Surgical and Non-surgical Therapy|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Ds0Giika4BIC&pg=PA6|year=2009|publisher=Elsevier Health Sciences|isbn=978-1-4160-3112-3|page=6}}
