hydride compressor
{{Short description|Hydrogen compressor based on absorption and desorption of hydrogen}}
A hydride compressor is a hydrogen compressor based on metal hydrides with absorption of hydrogen at low pressure, releasing heat, and desorption of hydrogen at high pressure, absorbing heat, by raising the temperature with an external heat source like a heated waterbed or electric coil.[http://www.norstore.ife.no/workshops/2004_Stavern/Presentations/03_08_Maehlen.pdf Metal hydride thermal sorption compressor]{{dead link|date=November 2017 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}[http://www.eere.energy.gov/hydrogenandfuelcells/pdfs/32405b37.pdf Hydride compressor] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120503100627/http://www1.eere.energy.gov/hydrogenandfuelcells/pdfs/32405b37.pdf |date=2012-05-03 }}{{Cite journal |last1=Popeneciu |first1=G. |last2=Almasan |first2=V. |last3=Coldea |first3=I. |last4=Lupu |first4=D. |last5=Misan |first5=I. |last6=Ardelean |first6=O. |date=2009 |title=Investigation on a three-stage hydrogen thermal compressor based on metal hydrides |journal=Journal of Physics: Conference Series |volume=182 |issue=1 |page=012053 |bibcode=2009JPhCS.182a2053P |doi=10.1088/1742-6596/182/1/012053 |s2cid=250673292 |doi-access=free}}{{cite journal | doi=10.1016/j.ijhydene.2007.03.002 | title=Investigation on high-pressure metal hydride hydrogen compressors | date=2007 | last1=Wang | first1=X. | last2=Bei | first2=Y. | last3=Song | first3=X. | last4=Fang | first4=G. | last5=Li | first5=S. | last6=Chen | first6=C. | last7=Wang | first7=Q. | journal=International Journal of Hydrogen Energy | volume=32 | issue=16 | pages=4011–4015 }}
Advantages of the hydride compressor are the high volumetric density, no moving parts, simplicity in design and operation, the possibility to consume waste heat instead of electricity{{Cite journal|last1=Lototskyy|first1=M.V.|last2=Yartys|first2=V.A.|last3=Pollet|first3=B.G.|last4=Bowman|first4=R.C.|date=4 April 2012|title=Metal hydride hydrogen compressors: A review|journal=International Journal of Hydrogen Energy|language=en|volume=39|issue=11|pages=5818–5851|doi=10.1016/j.ijhydene.2014.01.158|doi-access=free}} and reversible absorption/desorption, disadvantages are the high cost of the metal hydride and weight.

History
The first applications of metal hydrides were made by NASA to demonstrate long-term hydrogen storage for use in space propulsion. In the 1970s, automobiles, vans, and forklifts were demonstrated.{{cite journal | url=https://doi.org/10.1007%2Fs11837-006-0005-0 | doi=10.1007/s11837-006-0005-0 | title=Metal hydrides for vehicular applications: The state of the art | date=2006 | last1=Chandra | first1=Dhanesh | last2=Reilly | first2=James J. | last3=Chellappa | first3=Raja | journal=JOM | volume=58 | issue=2 | pages=26–32 | bibcode=2006JOM....58b..26C | s2cid=136414547 | url-access=subscription }} The metal hydrides were used for hydrogen storage, separation, and refrigeration.
