island of inversion
An island of inversion is a region of the chart of nuclides where isotopes have enhanced stability in a sea of mostly very unstable nuclei at the edge of the nuclear map. Each island contains isotopes with a non-standard ordering of single particle levels in the nuclear shell model. Such an area was first described in 1975 by French physicists carrying out spectroscopic mass measurements of exotic isotopes of lithium and sodium.{{cite journal |title=Direct measurement of the masses of {{sup|11}}Li and {{sup|26−32}}Na with an on-line mass spectrometer |author1=Thibault, Catherine |author2=Klapisch, Robert |author3=Rigaud, Chantal |author4=Poskanzer, Arthur M. |author5=Prieels, René |author6=Lessard, Louis |author7=Reisdorf, Willibrord |journal=Physical Review C |volume=12 |number=2 |pages=644–657 |date=1 August 1975 |doi=10.1103/PhysRevC.12.644 |doi-access=free }} Since then further studies have shown that at least five such regions exist. These are centered on five neutron-rich nuclides: Isotopes of lithium, Isotopes of carbon, Isotopes of sodium, Isotopes of silicon, and Isotopes of chromium.{{cite journal|url= http://physics.aps.org/articles/v3/104 |title= Islands of insight in the nuclear chart |date=2010-12-13 |first=B. Studies with the purpose of defining the edges of this region are still ongoing.
