Knife bins are associated with attempts to reduce knife crime and may be sponsored by the police or churches.{{Cite web |url=https://lifeorknife.west-midlands.police.uk/young-people/getting-help-reporting-knife-crime-and-ditching-knives/ |title=Getting help, reporting knife crime and ditching knives |website=Life Or Knife - The choice is yours |date= |access-date=29 October 2024}}{{Cite web |url=https://www.islington.media/news/islington-council-launches-six-new-knife-bins-to-provide-a-safe-place-to-surrender-knives |title=Islington Council launches six new knife bins to provide a safe place to surrender knives |website=Islington Council News |date=16 October 2020 |access-date=29 October 2024}}{{cite web |title=Weapon Surrender Bins |url=https://www.westmidlands-pcc.gov.uk/tackling-violence/weapon-surrender-bins/ |website=West Midlands Police & Crime Commissioner |access-date=23 October 2021}}{{cite web |title=Knife amnesty bins officially unveiled |url=https://www.essex.pfcc.police.uk/news/knife-amnesty-bins-officially-unveiled/ |website=Essex Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner |access-date=23 October 2021 |date=28 January 2015}}{{cite news |title=Horror As Blades Overspill From Knife Amnesty Bank |url=https://todayuknews.com/entertainment/horror-as-blades-overspill-from-knife-amnesty-bank/ |access-date=25 October 2021 |work=|website=todayuknews.com |date=20 October 2021}}

Background

On 8 February 2006, the United Kingdom home secretary, Charles Clarke announced that police forces in England, Scotland and Wales would hold a national knife amnesty between 24 May and 30 June 2006 in order to "reduce the devastation caused by knife crime."{{cite news |title=Clarke outlines plans for national knives amnesty |url=https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2006/feb/09/ukcrime.immigrationpolicy |access-date=25 October 2021 |work=The Guardian |agency=Press Association |date=9 February 2006 |language=en}} Since then, occasional amnesties have been held in local areas around the country. While Police agencies have observed some reductions in reports of knife crime during and after these amnesties, the effects are usually only short term.{{cite book |last1=Eades |first1=Chris |last2=Grimshaw |first2=Roger |last3=Silvestri |first3=Arianna |last4=Solomon |first4=Enver |title='Knife Crime' A review of evidence and policy |url=https://www.crimeandjustice.org.uk/sites/crimeandjustice.org.uk/files/ccjs_knife_report.pdf |via=www.crimeandjustice.org.uk |publisher=Centre for Crime and Justice Studies |access-date=25 October 2021 |page=27 |date=December 2007 |isbn=978-1-906003-06-7}}{{cite book |last1=Silvestri |first1=Arianna |last2=Oldfield |first2=Mark |last3=Squires |first3=Peter |last4=Grimshaw |first4=Roger |title=Young people, knives and guns A comprehensive review, analysis and critique of gun and knife crime strategies |url=https://www.crimeandjustice.org.uk/sites/crimeandjustice.org.uk/files/Gunandknife.pdf |via=www.crimeandjustice.org.uk |publisher=Centre for Crime and Justice Studies |access-date=25 October 2021 |location=London |language=en |date=September 2009|isbn=978-1-906003-19-7}} There is limited evidence that these amnesties are effective, other than raising awareness of the issues,{{cite web |last1=McNeill |first1=Abigail |last2=Wheller |first2=Levin |title=Knife crime: Evidence briefing |url=https://whatworks.college.police.uk/Research/Documents/Knife_Crime_Evidence_Briefing.pdf |website=whatworks.college.police.uk |publisher=College of Policing Limited |access-date=25 October 2021 |location=Coventry |page=4 |language=en |date=2019 |archive-date=25 October 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211025160438/https://whatworks.college.police.uk/Research/Documents/Knife_Crime_Evidence_Briefing.pdf |url-status=dead }} although campaigners argue they do make a difference.{{cite news |title=Amnesty bins 'making a difference' |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/av/uk-england-london-23023181 |access-date=25 October 2021 |work=BBC News |date=June 2013}}
