In terms of China's foreign policy, the major-country diplomacy doctrine has replaced the earlier Deng Xiaoping era slogan of "keep a low profile and build up power" and has legitimized a more active role for China on the world stage, particularly with regards to reform of the international order, engaging in open ideological competition with the West, and assuming a greater responsibility for global affairs in accordance with China's rising power and status.{{cite journal |last1=Smith |first1=Stephen |date=16 February 2021 |title=China's "Major Country Diplomacy" |url=https://academic.oup.com/fpa/article-abstract/17/2/orab002/6139347?redirectedFrom=fulltext |url-status=live |journal=Foreign Policy Analysis |doi=10.1093/fpa/orab002 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210921151122/https://academic.oup.com/fpa/article-abstract/17/2/orab002/6139347?redirectedFrom=fulltext |archive-date=21 September 2021 |access-date=21 September 2021|url-access=subscription }} Major-country diplomacy is a component of Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy.{{Cite web |title=习近平外交思想 |trans-title=Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy |url=https://www.12371.cn/special/xxzd/hxnr/wj/ |access-date=2025-02-06 |website=Chinese Communist Party}}
