patient administration system
{{Refimprove|date=December 2009}}
Patient Administration Systems (often abbreviated to PAS) developed out of the automation of administrative paperwork in healthcare organisations, particularly hospitals, and are one of the core components of a hospital's IT infrastructure. The PAS records the patient's demographics (e.g. name, home address, date of birth) and details all patient contact with the hospital, both outpatient and inpatient.{{cite web |url=http://www.bristol-inquiry.org.uk/final_report/annex_a/chapter_19_16.htm |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20020624224402/http://www.bristol-inquiry.org.uk/final_report/annex_a/chapter_19_16.htm |url-status=dead |archive-date=2002-06-24 |title=Learning from Bristol: the report of the public inquiry into children's heart surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary 1984 -1995 |accessdate=2012-05-22 |publisher=Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry |page=7 |date=2001-07-01 }}
PAS systems are often criticised for providing only administrative functionality to hospitals, however attempts to provide more clinical and operational functionality have often been expensive failures. {{weasel words|date=May 2017}}
History
In the UK, IRC PAS was developed at North Staffordshire Health Authority in the late 1960s.{{cite web |url= http://www.bmj.com/rapid-response/2011/10/29/nhs-can-succeed-it | title=The NHS can succeed in IT |author=Smith MF| publisher=BMJ 2003;326 (letter) 25 January }} It became widely used within the NHS and was supported commercially by ICL. Siemens Nixdorf acquired the PAS in 1996 but dropped support in 1998.{{cite web |url=http://www.hsj.co.uk/news/siemens-dumps-system/33716.article | title=Siemens dumps system | publisher=HSJ 16 July 1998 }} The NPfIT project was claimed to have deployed a total 141 new generation PAS by 2008 {{cite web|url=https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200708/cmhansrd/cm081104/debtext/81104-0001.htm | publisher=House of Commons|title=Tuesday 4 November 2008}} but this figure had risen to only 170 by 2010.{{cite web|url=https://www.theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?id=2010-01-06a.107.3|publisher=House of Lords | title=NHS: IT Strategy}}
