polio-like syndrome

{{short description|Group of medical symptoms that resemble poliomyelitis}}

Polio-like syndrome is a general description of a group of symptoms which mimic polio, including rarely permanent paralysis. Various triggers have been found, including some viruses from the same virus group as polio: enterovirus 68, enterovirus 71, and coxsackievirus A7.[https://edition.cnn.com/2014/02/25/health/california-mystery-disease/index.html?hpt=hp_t3 'About 20' cases of polio-like illness found in California], Jacque Wilson and Ashley Hayes, CNN

Other non-virus causes of polio-like symptoms are observed, though rarely, from snake bite, spider bite, scorpion sting, tick bite, or chemicals such as arsenic and organophosphorus insecticides.{{cite journal| pmid=6740077 | volume=6 | title=Nonpolio causes of polio-like paralytic syndromes | year=1984 | author=Gear JH | journal=Rev Infect Dis | issue=Suppl 2 | pages=S379-84 | doi=10.1093/clinids/6.supplement_2.s379}}
