Schizosaccharomyces is a genus of fission yeasts. The most well-studied species is S. pombe.{{cite journal|author1=Hoffman CS |author2=Wood V |author3=Fantes PA. | title = An Ancient Yeast for Young Geneticists: A Primer on the Schizosaccharomyces pombe Model System.|journal = Genetics| volume = 201| issue = 2| pages = 403–23|date=Oct 2015| pmid = 26447128 | doi = 10.1534/genetics.115.181503 | pmc=4596657}}{{cite journal|author1= Fantes PA |author2=Hoffman CS| title = A Brief History of Schizosaccharomyces pombe Research: A Perspective Over the Past 70 Years.|journal = Genetics| volume = 203| issue = 2| pages = 621–9|date=2016| pmid = 27270696|pmc=4896181| doi =10.1534/genetics.116.189407}} At present five Schizosaccharomyces species have been described (S. pombe, S. japonicus, S. octosporus, S. cryophilus and S. osmophilus).{{cite journal|vauthors=Rhind N, Chen Z, Yassour M, Thompson DA, Haas BJ, Habib N, Wapinski I, Roy S, Lin MF, Heiman DI, Young SK, Furuya K, Guo Y, Pidoux A, Chen HM, Robbertse B, Goldberg JM, Aoki K, Bayne EH, Berlin AM, Desjardins CA, Dobbs E, Dukaj L, Fan L, FitzGerald MG, French C, Gujja S, Hansen K, Keifenheim D, Levin JZ, Mosher RA, Müller CA, Pfiffner J, Priest M, Russ C, Smialowska A, Swoboda P, Sykes SM, Vaughn M, Vengrova S, Yoder R, Zeng Q, Allshire R, Baulcombe D, Birren BW, Brown W, Ekwall K, Kellis M, Leatherwood J, Levin H, Margalit H, Martienssen R, Nieduszynski CA, Spatafora JW, Friedman N, Dalgaard JZ, Baumann P, Niki H, Regev A, Nusbaum C |title=Comparative Functional Genomics of the Fission Yeasts|journal=Science|date=21 April 2011|volume=332|issue=6032|pages=930–936|doi=10.1126/science.1203357|pmid=21511999|pmc=3131103|bibcode=2011Sci...332..930R}}{{Cite journal |last1=Brysch-Herzberg |first1=Michael |last2=Tobias |first2=Andrea |last3=Seidel |first3=Martin |last4=Wittmann |first4=Rupert |last5=Wohlmann |first5=Elke |last6=Fischer |first6=Reinhard |last7=Dlauchy |first7=Dénes |last8=Peter |first8=Gabor |date=2019-06-01 |title=Schizosaccharomyces osmophilus sp. nov., an osmophilic fission yeast occurring in bee bread of different solitary bee species |journal=FEMS Yeast Research |language=en |volume=19 |issue=4 |pages=foz038 |doi=10.1093/femsyr/foz038 |pmid=31132130 |issn=1567-1364|doi-access=free }} Like the distantly related Saccharomyces cerevisiae, S. pombe is a significant model organism in the study of eukaryotic cell biology. It is particularly useful in evolutionary studies because it is thought to have diverged from the Saccharomyces cerevisiae lineage between 300 million and 1 billion years ago, and thus provides an evolutionarily distant comparison.{{Cite journal |last=Eisen |first=Jonathan A. |date=2002-02-21 |title=Brouhaha over the other yeast |journal=Nature |volume=415 |issue=6874 |pages=845–848 |doi=10.1038/nature725 |issn=0028-0836 |pmid=11859347|s2cid=3561503 |doi-access=free }}
