static rope
{{Short description|Rope designed not to stretch under load}}
A static rope is a low-elongation rope that is designed to stretch minimally when placed under load, typically less than 5%. In contrast, a dynamic rope is designed to stretch up to 40%.{{cite web |title=Static Rope vs Dynamic Rope |url=https://rappellingusa.com/static-rope-vs-dynamic-rope-when-to-use/ |website=rappellingusa.com |access-date=15 June 2020}} Static ropes have a wide variety of uses, for instance in fire rescue operations{{cite book|last=National Fire Protection Association|title=Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=g0Fx58bGuTQC&pg=PT498|year=2008|publisher=Jones & Bartlett Learning|isbn=9780763753429|page=498}} and caving.{{cite book|last1=Jenkis|first1=Mike|last2=Subic|first2=Aleksandar J.|title=Materials in sports equipment|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=wDmQF6alEq4C&pg=PA288|year=2003|publisher=Woodhead|isbn=9780849317668|page=288}}
Static ropes have some applications in climbing, such as hauling gear, though lead climbing is always done with a dynamic rope, since a fall on a static rope is stopped too quickly{{cite book|last=Luebben|first=Craig|title=Rock Climbing Anchors: A Comprehensive Guide|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=IXqk_0N1HgcC&pg=PA203|year=2007|publisher=The Mountaineers Books|isbn=9781594852398|page=203}} and may lead to serious injury.{{cite book|last=Luebben|first=Craig|title=Rock climbing: mastering basic skills|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=wNN2AefeF3EC&pg=PA73|year=2004|publisher=The Mountaineers Books|isbn=9780898867435|page=73}}{{cite book|last=Lourens|first=Tony|title=Guide To Climbing|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=mdQcBNKK1iIC&pg=PA39|year=2005|publisher=Stackpole|isbn=9780811701525|page=39}} Abseiling, however, is best done with a static rope or with a dynamic rope with low elasticity.{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=mAQdvgAACAAJ&q=9781560447597|title=How to Rappel!|last=Luebben|first=Craig|date=2000|publisher=Falcon|isbn=9781560447597|pages=26|language=en}}
Among other things, static ropes are often used for hauling up gear and other things. because of there low elongation and high weight limit, they excel at doing this job.
