The rank dates to Antiquity and was also used in the Byzantine Empire. In the modern Hellenic Army, the rank is superior to a {{lang|el-Latn|Lokhagos}} ({{lang|el|Λοχαγός}}, captain) and inferior to an {{lang|el-Latn|Antisyntagmatarchis}} ({{lang|el|Αντισυνταγματάρχης}}, Lieutenant Colonel), and held either usually by battalion ({{lang|el-Latn|tagma}}) executive officers (battalions are typically commanded by Lieutenant Colonels). In this case they are addressed as "{{lang|el-Latn|Kyrie Ypodioikita}}" ({{lang|el|Κύριε Υποδιοικητά}}), or simply as "{{lang|el-Latn|Kyrie Tagmatarcha}}" ({{lang|el|Κύριε Ταγματάρχα}}) in other cases.
