New svg map I have created
I have vectorised and turned the current map into an svg. Could someone with editing privileges please change the current map to this one?
Thanks. Mnohohrishnyi (talk) 16:40, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
:Is there a source for this data? Kreuner (talk) 14:34, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
::This is common sense knowlege. In Romania Maramures country have 10-20% Ukrainians Ukrainians of Romania, in Slovakia big Rusyn dialect of Ukrainian minority, in Poland Podlachian language is just a dialect of Ukrainian, and Lemkos Ukrainian subethnicity in Polish Ruś Szlachtowska Lemko Region, In Moldova more than 6% are Ukrainians Ukrainians in Moldova and even more in not controlled by Moldova Transnistria, which is Ukrainian majority region Demographic history of Transnistria. And this are regions in russia where Ukrainians are second larges ethnic group after russians https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainians_in_Russia#/media/File:Ukrainian_second_largest_population_group_in_areas_of_Russia.jpg 85.114.193.223 (talk) 01:08, 27 May 2025 (UTC)
:::"Common sense" isn't a sufficient source, you need to present academic sources that support your map. For example you are wrong about Lemko region in Poland, which isn't inhabited by Ukrainian speaking population since 1940s. Marcelus (talk) 12:14, 27 May 2025 (UTC)
::::You can just go to nations polls. Also according to the 2001 Ukrainian census, the last one in that region much more of the east is predominantly Ukrainian speaking. 2600:387:C:7212:0:0:0:5 (talk) 02:21, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
"Austro-Hungary"
Can someone please change all instances (a total of 3 at the moment) of "Austro-Hungary" to Austria-Hungary. This is likely a Ukrainian native speaker translating from his or her mother tongue (Австро-Угорщина) into English in which it is odd and unidiomatic. 2001:4C4E:248A:2B00:8B8:9E6:787E:1D3E (talk) 08:39, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
:Seconding this suggested edit. It's either a mistranslation or a conflation of the terms "Austria-Hungary" and "Austro-Hungarian Empire." Either way, it's not an accepted English term. Mropicki (talk) 16:43, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
Ukrainian as minority language
"{{lang|ru|Русский союз Латвии будет сотрудничать с партией Социалистов Молдовы}}"{{br}}
"Latvian Russian Union will cooperate with the Party of Socialists of Moldova"
For years, this was the article cited as a reference for the fact that Ukrainian is a recognized minority language in Moldova.
A part of the article is focused on how the Russian language is taught in Moldovan schools and is widely understood. This article does not even mention the Ukrainian language nor anything about Ukraine at ALL.
Who put this in? Why didn't anyone notice? Underfell Flowey (talk) 09:34, 6 February 2025 (UTC)
: User:Underfell Flowey, don't worry about what happened in the past, just go fix it so the article is accurate. If that means taking out the reference, and the content with it, then so be it. If the content was accurate, but only the reference is not, then remove only the reference, and replace it with a {{tl|citation needed}} tag.
: Also, I renamed this section, as few readers will understand the original Russian header. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 11:00, 6 February 2025 (UTC)
::I would, but I'm still 100 edits short of an extended-confirmed account on the English Wikipedia.
::User:Victor P. helped me find the Moldovan law on minorities which specfically mentions Ukrainian, which can be used as the new reference. https://www.legis.md/cautare/getResults?doc_id=64020&lang=ro Underfell Flowey (talk) 11:19, 6 February 2025 (UTC)
I removed the invalid ref. --Altenmann >talk 21:48, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
Map
Why is there no map of the spread of Ukrainian ? Is it due to the current conflict? 2409:408A:2DCA:7D40:B7EE:C209:8E4:49F2 (talk) 15:16, 13 March 2025 (UTC)
Transnistria
Should Transnistria be added under official, it is included in that section of Russian, Romanian (and Moldovan) but not Ukrainian even tho Ukrainian is one of its 3 official languages. 47.229.144.239 (talk) 05:03, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
Prudentupolis
Since for few years already Brazil has Ukrainian as an official Language in municipality of Prudentupolis. can whomever has ability to edit the page add that? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.176.132.202 (talk) 13:56, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
:*Prudentópolis actually but yeah
:Gheorge12345Slavianu (talk) 13:59, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
:Here is also a source of that for people who can actually add it in https://hromadske.ua/posts/ukrayinska-stala-oficijnoyu-movoyu-municipalitetu-v-braziliyi Gheorge12345Slavianu (talk) 14:01, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
Kherson and other oblasts
If Kherson is here why are the other occupied oblasts such as Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk and Donetsk not on here? Also would it be better to put Kherson, Crimea and the other oblasts as well as Prudentopolis in a separate section from Ukraine and Transnistria because they are not independent states. 2600:387:C:7212:0:0:0:5 (talk) 02:18, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
Number of Speakers
Firstly there are different numbers on this page for second speakers one says 7 million the other says 6 million.
I understand Ethnologue has this stated however I do question how trustworthy this is (it does have somewhat of a reputation for perhaps not being totally accurate). Assuming these numbers are correct there are 40 million Ukrainian speakers total. But Ukraines population before 2022 was 44 million (De Jure borders). This would mean that assuming all Ukrainian speakers where in Ukraine there are about 4 million Ukrainian citizens who do not speak Ukrainian at all, however the only region where people not speaking Ukrainian at all on a large scale is noted is Crimea with 2 million people (a not ile number of whom are recorded to speak Ukrainian).
Additionally by doing a quick add up of Ukrainian speakers outside Ukraine I found that roughly 1 million likely a more people speak Ukrainian as their first language outside of Ukraine. Which not including second language speakers outside Ukraine puts around 5 million Ukrainian citizens not speaking Ukrainian at all which is over 10% of the population and practically every source notes that almost all Ukrainians speakers where Ukrainian (weather it is mother tongue or not)
I think this topic should be researched deeper, I have seen sites online listing higher numbers of Ukrainian speakers (41-51 million) including the Ukrainian Language Speakers Wikipedia which lists roughly 41 million speakers, although I’m not sure how trustworthy it is. However I am convinced that by adding up first language Ukrainian speakers from around the world using already gathers info on Wikipedia there will be a higher number and that is more trustworthy since it is mostly taken by these census’s. 47.229.144.239 (talk) 04:06, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
