Tarombo is a term for genealogy in Batak culture/language.{{cite book|author=B. K. Marpaung|title=Buku Pusaka Tarombo Batak|year=1954|publisher=Raja|oclc=559425}} The Batak believe that they all come from the same ancestor: Si Raja Batak, the Batak patriarch.{{cite book|author=Jan S. Aritonang|title=Mission Schools in Batakland (Indonesia): 1861–1940|year=1994|publisher=BRILL|isbn=90-04-09967-0}} They kept the genealogy line tracing back to this ancestor, called Tarombo Batak.
