The tax is set up by a law voted on 24 April 2013 by the National Assembly, after several round trips between the Assembly and the Senate.{{cite web | url=http://www.actu-environnement.com/ae/news/loi-transport-eco-taxe-poids-lourds-adoptee-18394.php4 | title=Loi Transport : l'éco-taxe poids lourds définitivement adoptée | date=25 April 2013 | accessdate=2013-05-06}}
