History
The Ongoing Concept was formed in 2009 by brothers Kyle, Dawson, and Parker Scholz, and childhood friend TJ Nichols, while they were still in high school.https://www.facebook.com/theongoingconcept/info {{Bare URL inline|date=August 2024}}{{Cite web |title=The Ongoing Concept - discography, line-up, biography, interviews, photos |url=https://www.spirit-of-metal.com/en/band/The_Ongoing_Concept |access-date=2024-03-27 |website=www.spirit-of-metal.com}} The band recorded an EP titled What Is My Destiny, which was released independently on April 23, 2010.https://www.jesusfreakhideout.com/cdreviews/WhatIsMyDestinyEP.asp {{Bare URL inline|date=August 2024}} The EP displayed a stylistic dichotomy between acoustic rock and metalcore. The band followed up with another EP in 2011, titled Arrows Before Bullets,https://www.jesusfreakhideout.com/cdreviews/ArrowsBeforeBulletsEP.asp {{Bare URL inline|date=August 2024}} which took a heavier approach, following an electronicore style. Once the EP was released, Darrington departed from the band, with them continuing on as a four-piece.
On June 20, 2013, the band announced their signing to Solid State Records. Along with the announcement, they released their first single, "Cover Girl", off of their debut album Saloon, which released in August 20, 2013.{{cite web|url=http://www.indievisionmusic.com/2013/06/20/solid-state-records-sign-the-ongoing-concept-to-their-roster/|title=Solid State Records Sign The Ongoing Concept|author=Brandon J|date=June 20, 2013|publisher=Indie Vision Music|access-date=April 18, 2014}}{{cite web|url=http://www.altpress.com/news/entry/the_ongoing_concept_sign_to_solid_state_records_release_music_video|title=The Ongoing Concept sign to Solid State Records, release music video|last=Kraus|first=Brian|date=June 23, 2013|work=Alternative Press|access-date=April 18, 2014}} For the Billboard charting week of September 7, 2013, Saloon charted at No. 38 on the Heatseekers Albums chart.{{cite web|url=http://www.billboard.com/biz/charts/2013-09-07/heatseekers|title=Heatseekers Albums : September 7, 2013|author=Billboard.biz|date=September 7, 2013|publisher=Prometheus Global Media|access-date=April 18, 2014}} Two years later, the band released their sophomore effort Handmade, where they crafted the instruments they used, save for keyboards and microphones, out of a tree they chopped down.{{cite web | url=https://www.crossrhythms.co.uk/articles/music/The_Ongoing_Concept_Metal_band_with_handmade_instruments/56634/p1/ | title=The Ongoing Concept: Metal band with handmade instruments - the Ongoing Concept }}https://www.jesusfreakhideout.com/interviews/TheOngoingConcept2015.asp {{Bare URL inline|date=August 2024}} Following the album's release, by 2016, Kyle, Parker, and Nichols had departed from the band.{{cite web | url=https://www.indievisionmusic.com/news/ongoing-concept-loses-34-lineup/ | title=The Ongoing Concept Loses 3/4 Lineup(?) - Articles, News | date=November 20, 2016 }} Dawson hired on longtime friend and band videographer Ian Nelson on bass, Andy Crateau on guitars, and Cody Rhodes on drums.{{cite web | url=https://newnoisemagazine.com/reviews/review-ongoing-concept-places-2/ | title=Album Review: The Ongoing Concept - Places }} With the new lineup, the band recorded their third release, titled Places, which exhibited more of a somber style.{{cite web | url=https://www.theprp.com/2017/08/23/news/ongoing-concept-set-october-release-new-album-places/ | title=The Ongoing Concept Set October Release for New Album "Places" | date=August 23, 2017 }} After the album was issued, the band ceased activity until 2022.{{cite web | url=https://www.theprp.com/2021/12/16/news/the-ongoing-concept-tease-their-2022-return/ | title=The Ongoing Concept Tease Their 2022 Return | date=December 16, 2021 }} With the return of the original lineup along with Crateau, the band announced efforts for a new album in early 2023.{{cite web | url=https://www.theprp.com/2022/06/22/news/the-ongoing-concept-fallstar-the-undertaking-meadows-announce-fall-west-coast-tour/ | title=The Ongoing Concept, Fallstar, the Undertaking! & Meadows Announce Fall West Coast Tour | date=June 22, 2022 }} The first single, "Prisoner Again", was released on February 3, 2023, along with the preorder for the album, Again, which was released on March 31, 2023.{{cite web | url=https://www.theprp.com/2023/02/02/news/the-ongoing-concept-premiere-prisoner-again-off-upcoming-new-album-again/ | title=The Ongoing Concept Premiere "Prisoner Again" off Upcoming New Album "Again" | date=February 3, 2023 }}
