three-dart average
{{Short description|Best averages achieved by darts players}}
The three-dart average in darts is the average of the total score achieved with each turn of three darts.
Averages are the most cited statistics in matches as they give a rough estimate of a player's form. The longer a match lasts, the harder it is to maintain a high average, as low-scoring legs or missed darts when aiming for a double bring the average down.
While there have been match averages of over 130 in floor tournaments,{{cite web | url=https://joshsdartistry.com/2015/04/13/kyle-anderson-hits-world-record-darting-average/ | title=Kyle Anderson hits World-Record Darting Average | date=13 April 2015 | publisher=Joshua Gorton | accessdate= 6 March 2019}} the world record only lists televised matches, which are easy to verify.
Definition
To compute the average score of a dart the total amount of points scored is divided by the number of darts thrown. This is sometimes used and called the one-dart average. The three-dart average then is just that number multiplied by three.
When a Player Busts on the First Dart of a Throw:
The bust counts as a complete throw (i.e., 3 darts) even though only one dart is physically thrown.
The remaining two darts in that turn are considered "used" but not scored because the score for the turn is zero.
When a Player Wins the Leg on the First Dart of a Throw:
If the winning dart is the first dart of a turn, only that dart is counted as thrown for that throw.
The other two darts are not counted since they were not thrown.

The "true" tournament averages — which would be calculated by adding up the points scored divided by total darts thrown and multiplying by 3 (3DA) — may differ, but cannot be accurately calculated for most tournaments as this data is unavailable. For example, Michael van Gerwen had a TMA of 106.37 in the 2017 PDC World Darts Championship, but his 3DA over the whole tournament was 107.06.}} |
