Tympany or tympanites (sometimes tympanism or tympania), also known as meteorism (especially in humans), is a medical condition in which excess gas accumulates in the gastrointestinal tract and causes abdominal distension.{{cite book|last1=Dorland's|title=Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary|date=2012|url=http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/tympanites|publisher=Elsevier|isbn=978-0-19-856878-0|page=1992|edition=32nd}} The term is from the Greek τύμπανο (meaning "drum").
