The Soroptimist Club Firenze (Italy) has launched a project aimed at involving its sisters to actively take part in Wikipedia and contribute to expanding and enhancing the encyclopedia by providing quality articles.

Wikipedia has become the largest free and collaborative cultural initiative in the world and much of the basic knowledge of world’s citizens comes from its articles.

The S.I. members’ professional skills certainly make them reliable authors of articles regarding prominent female figures. The Soroptimist Club Firenze has started creating biographies of renowed women who have marked the history of SI Italy and that established themselves in various disciplines and professional fields.

The aim is to contribute to the extent of coverage of Wikipedia by achieving greater visibility of eminent women, soroptimists and non soroptimists, by dealing with female topics and showing women’s world view.

The Club intends to involve other clubs in this activity and the project has been chosen as national project.

The activity takes place along several lines that aim at:

1. Providing an understanding of the mutual benefit of collaborating with Wikipedia for both S.I. and the encyclopedia so that Wikipedia acquires quality articles edited by highly competent women and Soroptimist members contribute to disseminating women’s world view in the encyclopedia.

2.Enabling as many members as possible to acquire the basic skills to edit new Wikipedia articles, translate and update them.
