It destroys the grammar, many times switching subject and object to no purpose and for no reason. It can often be dropped altogether with no loss of meaning, or simply be replaced by a single short word such as "in" or "with" etc. It is profligately used mainly by media commentators, who should know better. Someone on the BBC once said, "This man's pay is low in terms of his wages." when all that is required to express that idea is, "This man is low-paid."
