The Anome is a second-wave Wikipedian.

The Anome [{{fullurl:Special:PrefixIndex|from=The+Anome&namespace=2}} abides].

Wikidata

Fill in :wikidata:Property:P13273, Letterboxd Studio ID. Letterboxd's film data is apparently imported from TMDB; however, Letterboxd has content of its own that makes it a useful resource worth linking here. Letterboxd studio IDs are mostly generated from the company name, punctuation- and accent-stripped, lowercased, with words separated by hyphens; but some are different, having, for example, "-1" or "-2" at the end, for reasons yet to be determined.

See query on :wikidata:User:The Anome. So far 222 of a possible 5000+ film production companies have Letterboxd studio IDs assigned. — 28 March 2025

Special case: {{tl|infobox mapframe}} that contains a {{tl|WikidataCoord}} template with a non-blank 'display=' parameter results in a page with no geocoordinate link. Hunt these down and fix them.

It looks like ORES may now do WikiProject detection, so I won't need to roll my own ML for all of this. See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/ORES#Support_table

However, I wish it was a bit more fine-grained.

Note: :Category:Pages using WikiProject banner shell without banner templates was causing a large number of false negatives for the categorization project. Query https://quarry.wmcloud.org/query/72412 now fixed.

Geodata to-do

= Next steps =

{{tl|coord missing}} now assigns pages with to

depending on the Wikidata entity's P625 property.

Next step is to start using data from this for the bot.

= Bot =

  • Do similar format-preserving stuff to tag remover part of bot
  • fix https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AWhatLinksHere&target=Template%3ACoords+missing&namespace=0 , which is messing with the bot's logic
  • Remove lines from visited.txt that have "no such page" or "a type article" in logfile.txt; currently there are 4000+ of these; the first is caused by draftification, the second by a now-fixed bug in the bot code finding false positives

= Quality control =

  • Look into autodetection of low-resolution geocoding of fine-grained objects (villages, buildings, landmarks...). Ping User:Abductive.
  • Investigate why the matcher did not find the Okpilak River, surely a slam-dunk match?

= Other =

  • Remove {{tl|coord missing}} tags from articles with OS coordinates: ([https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?before=&common_wiki=auto&negcats=&active_tab=tab_output&ores_type=any&search_query=&ores_prediction=any&referrer_name=&labels_yes=&depth=0&ores_prob_from=&output_compatability=catscan&categories=Articles%20with%20OS%20grid%20coordinates&sitelinks_no=&language=en&outlinks_any=&cb_labels_yes_l=1&sortby=none&sparql=&edits%5Bflagged%5D=both&search_wiki=&maxlinks=&smaller=&langs_labels_any=&project=wikipedia&format=wiki&wikidata_source_sites=&min_sitelink_count=&output_limit=&larger=&ores_prob_to=&doit=Do%20it!&interface_language=en&templates_any=&langs_labels_yes=&manual_list_wiki=&show_redirects=both&max_age=&wpiu=any&ns%5B0%5D=1&templates_yes=coord%20missing&links_to_no=&search_max_results=500&sortorder=ascending&common_wiki_other=&wikidata_item=no&referrer_url=&outlinks_no=&templates_no=&wikidata_prop_item_use=&edits%5Bbots%5D=both&links_to_any=&min_redlink_count=1&edits%5Banons%5D=both&cb_labels_no_l=1®exp_filter=&links_to_all=&labels_no=&outlinks_yes=&manual_list=&sitelinks_any=&subpage_filter=either&sitelinks_yes=&pagepile=&combination=subset&max_sitelink_count=&labels_any=&minlinks=&cb_labels_any_l=1&langs_labels_no=&page_image=any&source_combination=&wikidata_label_language=&after= PetScan])

  • Harvest unused lat/long data from {{tl|infobox settlement}}, and replace with {{tl|coord}}: see [https://bambots.brucemyers.com/TemplateParam.php?wiki=enwiki&template=Infobox+settlement here] for monitoring script.

Not many articles have this, so this is likely to affect a couple of hundred of articles at most. Still, every little helps.

  • Monitor :Category:Pages with malformed coordinate tags
  • Why do Republic of Dagestan etc. articles escape the {{tl|coord missing}} sorter?
  • Possible low-hanging fruit for geocoding: the following categories have thousands of non-geocoded articles that are not getting matched by my current software, and may benefit from special-purpose matching heuristics:
  • :Category:Brazil articles missing geocoordinate data (was 3000+ articles, now 2,478 as of 2015-03-25) -- ??
  • Note: most of these appear to be rivers -- just matched 500+ of these by translating GNS names
  • :Category:Iran articles missing geocoordinate data (13,000+ articles) -- transliteration problems, presumably
  • It looks like a lot of this might be repetition of the same location in multiple places: the bot's code gets 7000+ multi-matches for Iran
  • See also this paper: "Cross linguistic name matching in English and Arabic: a "one to many mapping" extension of the Levenshtein edit distance algorithm" in {{Cite journal | doi = 10.3115/1220835.1220895| title = Cross linguistic name matching in English and Arabic| journal = Proceedings of the main conference on Human Language Technology Conference of the North American Chapter of the Association of Computational Linguistics | pages = 471| year = 2006| last1 = Freeman | first1 = A. T. | last2 = Condon | first2 = S. L. | last3 = Ackerman | first3 = C. M. }}
  • And this: A verified Arabic-IPA mapping for Arabic transcription ... http://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/79653/1/brierley14jss.pdf
  • And this: http://geonames.nga.mil/gns/html/romanization.html
  • :Category:Pakistan articles missing geocoordinate data (~3500 articles) -- transliteration problems, presumably
  • Note: 700+ multimatches from bot code
  • :Category:Philippines articles missing geocoordinate data (2000+ articles) -- ??
  • Note: mostly universities, schools, other locatable organizations, very little here looks bot-matc
  • :Category:South Korea articles missing geocoordinate data (1700+ articles) -- not sure what's going on here: fixed my FIPS 10-4 mapping, but that doesn't go very far towards fixing the problem
  • Note: insignificant number (< 100) of multimatches
  • This may be a matter of transliteration: McCune–Reischauer vs. Revised Romanization
  • :Category:Turkey articles missing geocoordinate data (5000+ articles) -- lots of places with the same names but in different regions (eg. 17 villages all called "Akpınar"), same problem as was found with Polish placenames (also: why is Akçakoca failing to be caught?) The bot code finds 3000+ multi-matches for Turkey.
  • Also, this is due to non-standard naming conventions for the hierarchy of Turkish article categories: see, for example :Category:Ankara Province.
  • I've now used spatial disambiguation to resolve some 2000+ of these.

Total is over 27,000 possibles: even doing a fraction of these would make a big dent in the backlog.
