| Był bogacz, który zbiorów potrzebnym udzielał;
| There was a rich man who shared his wealth with the needy; |
| Był autor, co się z cudzej sławy rozweselał;
| There flourished an author, for renown never greedy; |
| Był celnik, który nie kradł; szewc, który nie pijał;
| There was a customs official who did not steal; a cobbler who shunned alcohol; |
| Żołnierz, co się nie chwalił; łotr, co nie rozbijał;
| A soldier who did not boast; a rogue who did not brawl; |
| Był minister rzetelny, o sobie nie myślał;

"Kulawy i ślepy" ("The Blind Man and the Lame")

| Niósł ślepy kulawego, dobrze im się działo;
| A blind man was carrying a lame man on his back, |
| Ale że to ślepemu nieznośną się zdało,
| And everything was going well, everything's on track, |
| Iż musiał zawżdy słuchać, co kulawy prawi,
| When the blind man decides to take it into his head |
| Wziął kij w rękę: "Ten — rzecze — z szwanku nas wybawi."
| That he needn't listen to all that the lame man said. |
| Idą; a wtem kulawy krzyknie: "Umknij w lewo!"
| "This stick I have will guide the two of us safe," said he, |
| Ślepy wprost i choć z kijem, uderzył łbem w drzewo.
| And though warned by the lame man, he plowed into a tree. |
| Idą dalej; kulawy przestrzega od wody;
| On they proceeded; the lame man now warned of a brook; |

| The two survived, but their possessions a soaking took. |
