Question from Cassaph (19:15, 7 May 2025)
Hello, Cyberdog ... Gave up for a while, now trying again to create an article. The text is ready, but when enter it in Sandbox (where I lost a previous version), and review the result, it doesn't look right. It's about formatting. Are there people who will do the formatting after you've entered the text and references? I don't want to spend the rest of my life trying to figure it out.
Also, when you hit publish, does it literally get published, or is there a review process? I know this info would be in the endless descriptions of how to edit, but I'm just wanting the simplest step-by-step instruction, which doesn't seem to exist. Or if it does, I can't find it.
Sorry if I seem a little ranty.
Thank you! --Cassaph (talk) 19:15, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
:Hello again Cassaph. I don't see any other edits to your account other than to this page, so I'm not able to give any specific advise. You can ask for help with copyediting at WP:GOCE. They can help with formatting any other copyediting. If your article is in the Draft space (it has the prefix Draft: in front of the title), then clicking "publish" will only publish it to the area of Wikipedia you can keep working on articles that aren't yet ready. Once you finish, and you want it reviewed, you can copy an paste this template:
, to the top and it will be added to the queue to be reviewed. cyberdog958Talk 02:14, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
::Thanks again. Didn't know about Draft space. Seems I always wind up in Sandbox, with the only options being "review" and "publish." And I'm not ready to "publish" so it all winds up disappearing. I will look for Draft. Don't suppose you have a link to it...? Cassaph (talk) 18:35, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:::Cassaph You can use the Article Wizard and follow the prompts and it will automatically create a draft article for you so you can work on your draft. cyberdog958Talk 18:57, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
::::This is immensely helpful. Sorry to be such a dunderhead. Will try again, after travel. Cassaph (talk) 17:07, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
::::Hello again ... I formatted an article about Shirley Strum, hit publish, then wondered what next. I decided to check Wikipedia for Shirley Strum and -- lo -- someone else had made a page for her, just recently. So I wonder what's become of my effort. I guess I can add to the page that's there, which is labeled "orphan." It's all a little weird, that suddenly some random person decided to create this page about Shirley. Cassaph (talk) 19:48, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::Cassaph Yes, I would combine the information in your page in the page that has been published. The draft you have on your user page seems more detailed, so you should just add those details and references to the other page. cyberdog958Talk 21:37, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
Question from Cosmobytes (16:18, 20 May 2025)
Hello! I was just working on editing an article about John Butcher, an Australian Rules Footballer, and I found a link in a citation that was broken (https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/melbourne-faces-decision-on-key-forward-john-butcher/story-e6frf9jf-1225760419671) and led to a "page not found" error. Should I remove the citation and related content, or is there a better way to go about this? Thank you! --Cosmobytes (talk) 16:18, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
:Cosmobytes Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. It is often that links become not accessible anymore. The best course of action is to try and add a link to an archived version of the page, or link to a new URL to a similar page that verifies the same information. You can find out the best ways to do so here. If you are unable to fix it, you can just tag the reference with dead and it will add it to a category so someone else may be able to find a suitable link. cyberdog958Talk 05:02, 27 May 2025 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Weekly highlight
- A community-wide discussion about a very delicate issue for the development of Abstract Wikipedia is now open on Meta: where to store the abstract content that will be developed through functions from Wikifunctions and data from Wikidata. The discussion is open until June 12 at Abstract Wikipedia/Location of Abstract Content, and every opinion is welcomed. The decision will be made and communicated after the consultation period by the Foundation.
Updates for editors
- Since last week, on all wikis except the largest 20, people using the mobile visual editor will have additional tools in the menu bar, accessed using the new
+
toolbar button. To start, the new menu will include options to add: citations, hieroglyphs, and code blocks. Deployment to the remaining wikis is scheduled to happen in June. - File:Octicons-tools.svg The
#ifexist
parser function will no longer register a link to its target page. This will improve the usefulness of , which will eventually only list pages that are the target of an actual red link. This change will happen gradually as the source pages are updated. - This week, the Moderator Tools team will launch a new filter to Recent Changes, starting at Indonesian Wikipedia. This new filter highlights edits that are likely to be reverted. The goal is to help Recent Changes patrollers identify potentially problematic edits. Other wikis will benefit from this filter in the future.
- Upon clicking an empty search bar, logged-out users will see suggestions of articles for further reading. The feature will be available on both desktop and mobile. Readers of Catalan, Hebrew, and Italian Wikipedias and some sister projects will receive the change between May 21 and mid-June. Readers of other wikis will receive the change later. The goal is to encourage users to read the wikis more. Learn more.
- Some users of the Wikipedia Android app can use a new feature for readers, WikiGames, a daily trivia game based on real historical events. The release has started as an A/B test, available to 50% of users in the following languages: English, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Turkish.
- The Newsletter extension that is available on MediaWiki.org allows the creation of various newsletters for global users. The extension can now publish new issues as section links on an existing page, instead of requiring a new page for each issue.
- File:Octicons-sync.svg View all community-submitted that were resolved last week.
Updates for technical contributors
- The previously deprecated
ipblocks
views in Wiki Replicas will be removed in the beginning of June. Users are encouraged to query the newblock
andblock_target
views instead. - File:Octicons-sync.svg Detailed code updates later this week: MediaWiki
Meetings and events
- Wikidata and Sister Projects is a multi-day online event that will focus on how Wikidata is integrated to Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. The event runs from May 29 – June 1. You can read the Program schedule and register.

Hi Cyberdog958,
Thank you for the warm welcome! I’m planning to contribute a new section and wanted to ask about citation guidelines.
To ensure the information I add is verifiable and reliable, could you please let me know what types of sources or websites are considered acceptable for citations on Wikipedia? Are there any specific criteria I should follow when selecting sources?
I appreciate your help as I learn more about editing here.
Best regards,
Anand Digital PR --Ananddigitalpr (talk) 18:08, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
:Ananddigitalpr Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Everything here on Wikipedia should be based on a reliable source. There are, basically, sources that are reputable for accuracy and fact-checking. They should be independent of the subject and ideally a secondary source. You can look through the links to find more information about suitable sources. If you have any other questions, you can ask them here or over at the Teahouse. cyberdog958Talk 21:56, 28 May 2025 (UTC)

Weekly highlight
- The Chart extension is now available on all Wikimedia wikis. Editors can use this new extension to create interactive data visualizations like bar, line, area, and pie charts. Charts are designed to replace many of the uses of the legacy Graph extension.
Updates for editors
- It is now easier to configure automatic citations for your wiki within the visual editor's citation generator. Administrators can now set a default template by using the
_default
key in the local MediaWiki:Citoid-template-type-map.json page (example diff). Setting this default will also help to future-proof your existing configurations when new item types are added in the future. You can still set templates for individual item types as they will be preferred to the default template. Updates for technical contributors
- Starting the week of June 2, bots logging in using
action=login
oraction=clientlogin
will fail more often. This is because of stronger protections against suspicious logins. Bots using bot passwords or using a loginless authentication method such as OAuth are not affected. If your bot is not using one of those, you should update it; usingaction=login
without a bot password was deprecated in 2016. For most bots, this only requires changing what password the bot uses. - From this week, Wikimedia wikis will allow ES2017 features in JavaScript code for official code, gadgets, and user scripts. The most visible feature of ES2017 is
async
/await
syntax, allowing for easier-to-read code. Until this week, the platform only allowed up to ES2016, and a few months before that, up to ES2015. - File:Octicons-sync.svg Detailed code updates later this week: MediaWiki

- Scholarship applications to participate in the GLAM Wiki Conference 2025 are now open. The conference will take place from 30 October to 1 November, in Lisbon, Portugal. GLAM contributors who lack the means to support their participation can apply here. Scholarship applications close on June 7th.

Allowing time to create redirects
Hello: I notice you’ve been shuttering redirect creation proposals en-masse less than a day after their creation. In future could you consider waiting maybe a week before doing so, to see whether anyone is willing to create the redirects? Because in the time you shutter them, people are willing to make them (episode titles receiving redirects is normal Wikipedia standard – most people don’t want to spend all that time making them, but lucky for us there are Wikipedians willing to), and many redirect suggestions you would have otherwise shuttered were created in the time before you came back online. I’d agree with you shuttering those that went a week or two without being answered, but that time should be afforded new suggestions as well. Gellianfew (talk) 12:20, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
:Gellianfew There is no required time that the requests have to be posted before they are evaluated. I don’t think that mass redirect requests of every possible episode title for relatively unknown television shows with no real likeliness or possibility that they would ever be searched for or turned into actual articles are not necessary or helpful to create. There isn’t any guidelines for reviewers so it is really based on whoever sees it first is the one who reviews it. cyberdog958Talk 00:31, 4 June 2025 (UTC)

Weekly highlight
- The Trust and Safety Product team is finalizing work needed to roll out temporary accounts on large Wikipedias later this month. The team has worked with stewards and other users with extended rights to predict and address many use cases that may arise on larger wikis, so that community members can continue to effectively moderate and patrol temporary accounts. This will be the second of three phases of deployment – the last one will take place in September at the earliest. For more information about the recent developments on the project, see this update. If you have any comments or questions, write on the talk page, and join a CEE Catch Up this Tuesday.
Updates for editors
- File:Octicons-gift.svg The watchlist expiry feature allows editors to watch pages for a limited period of time. After that period, the page is automatically removed from your watchlist. Starting this week, you can set a preference for the default period of time to watch pages. :Tnp2810 Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Images used here on Wikipedia can be of many different origins. Sometimes editors take photographs of celebrities or buildings or nature or anything else, and release it under a free license for anyone to use. Other images may be in the public domain for one reason or another, such as taken by a United States employee in the course of their duties. The photos from online are typically copyrighted by the photographer and are usually the last resort type of images used, because they can only be used through fair use. Hello. I created an article on Clive Osgood and pressed Publish, but so far nothing has happened. --Limetree1000 (talk) 21:02, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
:Limetree1000 Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. I don’t see any other edits to your account, and I don’t see a page or even a deletion at Clive Osgood, so I’m not sure where your edit went. If you were logged out when you created it, it would not show up as edited by you, but by your IP address. You can write the page again while logged in and you can use the Article Wizard to publish it to the draftspace. cyberdog958Talk 22:22, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
::Thanks. I wrote an article, and pressed Publish, but nothing happened. I was logged on. After your advice I repeated the article and pressed publish, but still nothing happened. Limetree1000 (talk) 06:32, 12 June 2025 (UTC)

Can’t find the publish button to submit my article. --Limetree1000 (talk) 06:34, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
::Hello Limetree1000. The publish button should be at the bottom of the edit window and should look like this: cyberdog958Talk 03:57, 19 June 2025 (UTC)

Question from TraceyMord on Dale Earnhardt (10:48, 12 June 2025)
So Dale Earnhardt was 5’9 when he passed away. I proved it on his autopsy report and they keep saying 6’1??? That’s crazy --TraceyMord (talk) 10:48, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
:TraceyMord It looks like your edit was reverted because the source you are using is questionable. If you can find a better source, you can use that and make the change. cyberdog958Talk 03:59, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
Question from Calina Diana on Enshin kaikan (16:19, 12 June 2025)
--Calina Diana (talk) 16:19, 12 June 2025 (UTC)

Hello. Nice to meet you. I would like to add a page. Is there a tutorial how to do it? Thank you. --RomanianEditor1 (talk) 13:36, 13 June 2025 (UTC)

Question from Brightsiding (16:05, 14 June 2025)
Hello! I'm wondering if you could help me figure out how to re-use sources. Is it possible to re-cite a book/use a book previously cited, but only change the page number for that specific citation?
I've looked through the Help sections on referencing, citations with and without templates, and lots of other guides, but I can't find a specific guide on whether this is possible (and how I would do this in either Visual Editor or source editor).
Thank you! Brightsiding (talk) 16:05, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
:Brightsiding I think the best page to help you would be WP:CITEPAGE. If give you a couple different options to cite specific page numbers in the same source. cyberdog958Talk 19:10, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
Question from TTTBarna (11:44, 16 June 2025)
Hello Cyberdog958, Many thanks for agreeing to mentor me. I have written this page about myself, and know that there are Conflict rules. Would you or someone else be able to review it? I have a book being published on 23 June and would like to have some information about me on Wikipedia by then, if at all possible. Many thanks, Neasa --TTTBarna (talk) 11:44, 16 June 2025 (UTC)
:TTTBarna I have moved your page to the draftspace as, since you have a conflict-of-interest, the draft should be reviewed before it is published. I can tell you, currently the page does not meet notability and the sources are all unreliable and written by you. Autobiographies are strongly discouraged and I would recommend against it. I will leave some instructions on your talk page to formally declare your conflict. cyberdog958Talk 04:14, 19 June 2025 (UTC)

Jayanthi Kumaresh
Hello
I saw that you had removed links from this article and cited NOELBODY. I had a similar doubt and had asked about it in the teahouse Wikipedia:Teahouse#Jayanthi Kumaresh . and based on their advice went ahead to add the youtube links. The subject has an official channel and her original productions would have to be referenced from there. Also for TED talks, there is no secondary source or news publishing that we can refer to. Can you kindly let me know how to address this situation. Shyamalswiki (talk) 20:05, 17 June 2025 (UTC)
:Shyamalswiki Your additions to the page continue to be very promotional in tone. You are also not referencing YouTube videos by linking them, you are just linking them, which is not allowed per WP:NOELBODY. You may add a citation to them, but not just link them. Also, in the Teahouse discussion, the editors there state that citations to YouTube videos are really not ideal and are all primary sources as they are to her own videos. I would recommend not using these links as they reference nothing. cyberdog958Talk 20:35, 17 June 2025 (UTC)
::I do have citations to validate every line mentioned. If they have been lifted from the news article then how is considered promotional ? If I understand right, if I put the link within a cite tag then is it allowed ? I would at least like to reference her official channel when I mention about the original singles she has composed. Shyamalswiki (talk) 21:51, 17 June 2025 (UTC)
::I have made another attempt to change the tone of the article to be more neutral. Kindly review if you are able to. Thank you very much Shyamalswiki (talk) 03:19, 18 June 2025 (UTC)

Question from MD-EPN (14:06, 19 June 2025)
Hey Cyberdog, hope you're well. I am an independent contractor affiliated with Endpoints News, and I've been tasked with publishing their wikipedia page. Right now, I am not sure how to create a draft as searching for "Endpoints News" redirects to "Financial Times" (the company that owns Endpoints), and so I don't find a red link. Before we press publish I would love to get some feedback from fellow Wikipedians to make sure we're following the rules. Please, can you suggest what I might be missing to start a draft? --MD-EPN (talk) 14:06, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
:MD-EPN Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. First, know that editing Wikipedia for pay required the disclosure per the Terms of Use. I recommend you read this page before going forth with attempting to create a page. I can say that your sandbox draft currently reads solely as promotional. You can follow this link to create a draft and it gives instructions to submit it for review before it is published. If you have any further questions, you can as me here or over at the Teahouse. cyberdog958Talk 03:01, 20 June 2025 (UTC)
