x2x allows the console (keyboard and mouse) on one X server to be used to control another X server.{{Cite web|url=https://www.linuxjournal.com/content/share-keyboardmouse-between-multiple-computers-x2x|title=Share a Keyboard/Mouse Between Multiple Computers With x2x|date=11 September 2008|website=Linux Journal|access-date=7 July 2020}} It also provides ancillary functions like clipboard sharing.
The software was developed in 1996 by David Chaiken at DEC. It is currently maintained by Mikhail Gusarov.
The tool provided ideas used by x2vnc{{Cite web|url=https://fredrik.hubbe.net/x2vnc.html|title=x2vnc|date=2016-06-13|access-date=2024-05-27}} and Win2vnc.{{Cite web|url=https://fredrik.hubbe.net/win2vnc.html|title=win2vnc|date=2004-06-14|access-date=2024-05-27}} It is still in use to this day.{{Cite web|url=https://repology.org/project/x2x/versions|title=repology|date=2024-05-27|access-date=2024-05-27}}
The name x2x has been registered as an international trademark{{Cite web|url=https://branddb.wipo.int/en/brand/WO500000001160167|title=x2x (No. 1 160 167) at Global Brand Database|access-date=2024-05-31}} by Triple-S GmbH of Germany for one of their software products despite the obvious prior use of the name.
