History

The term "yiff", within the context of the furry fandom, was initially conceived as part of the Foxese language, a series of onomatopoeic sounds used by a group of anthropomorphic fox roleplayers in the 1990s. At the time, the term was non-sexual, translating to an emphatic yes before being used by another group as a generic term for sex.{{Cite web |title=yiff - Everything2.com |url=https://everything2.com/index.pl?node=yiff |access-date=2025-01-09 |website=everything2.com}}{{Unreliable source?|date=January 2025}}
The CSI episode "Fur and Loathing", which aired on October 30, 2003, increased awareness of the term outside of the furry fandom while misrepresenting and inadvertently contributing to the negative stigma commonly associated with the furry fandom.{{Cite web |title=CSI Files - Fur And Loathing |url=https://www.csifiles.com/episodes/csi/season4/fur_and_loathing.shtml |access-date=2025-01-09 |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |last=ursulav |title=So I watched CSI tonight... |url=https://ursulav.livejournal.com/102109.html#cutid1 |access-date=2025-01-09 |website=ursulav.livejournal.com |language=en}} The word yiff became mainstream later that decade from anti-furry rhetoric on sites like 4chan.
According to Google Trends, Google searches for the term were more prevalent during the 2000s-2010s, reaching a peak during June 2010 before steadily declining steadily outside of a brief rise in November 2020.{{Cite web |title=Google Trends |url=https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=Yiff&hl=en |access-date=2024-05-29 |website=Google Trends |language=en-US}}
