Critical reception
Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "Howard aims to prove that there's no sophomore slump in her future with this sassy, disco-kissed R&B throw-down. Yeah, she's workin' the "freak" thang yet again. And, yeah, she's capable of far better. But the truth is that the hook here is just too darn infectious to allow for much complaining. Kids are going to love the Cameo-styled keyboard effects that underline the chorus. A fine way to preview the album Welcome to Fantasy Island."{{cite magazine|author= Flick, Larry |title= Reviews & Previews: Singles |url= https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Billboard/90s/1997/Billboard-1997-06-14.pdf |magazine= Billboard |date= 14 June 1997 |page= 74 |accessdate= 4 December 2020}} British magazine Music Week gave the song three out of five, adding, "Kool & the Gang's "Get Down on It" provides the basis of this slice of R&B on which Howard is at her most sensual."{{cite magazine|first=|last=|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/UK/Music-Week/1998/Music-Week-1998-02-21.pdf|title=Reviews: Singles|magazine=Music Week|date=21 February 1998|page=10|access-date=7 September 2023}}
