"BBL Drizzy" (released as the file name "BBL DRIZZY BPM 150.mp3") is a "diss track beat" by American record producer Metro Boomin. It was released on May 5, 2024, in response to the Drake–Kendrick Lamar feud which consisted of multiple diss tracks from both sides. "BBL Drizzy" samples an artificial intelligence-generated track, released on April 14, of the same name by comedian King Willonius.{{Cite web |last=Curto |first=Justin |date=2024-05-09 |title=Metro Boomin Couldn't Have Made 'BBL Drizzy' Without This Comedian |url=https://www.vulture.com/article/bbl-drizzy-metro-boomin-sample-comedian.html |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240513130725/https://www.vulture.com/article/bbl-drizzy-metro-boomin-sample-comedian.html |archive-date=2024-05-13 |access-date=2024-05-24 |website=Vulture}} It is the first notable example of AI sampling in mainstream hip-hop music, according to Billboard.{{Cite magazine |last=Robinson |first=Kristin |date=2024-05-15 |title=Metro Boomin's 'BBL Drizzy' Is More Than a Joke – It Could Signal the Future of Sampling |url=https://www.billboard.com/business/tech/metro-boomin-bbl-drizzy-future-ai-sampling-1235682587/ |access-date=2024-05-17 |magazine=Billboard |language=en-US |archive-date=2024-05-17 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240517051406/https://www.billboard.com/business/tech/metro-boomin-bbl-drizzy-future-ai-sampling-1235682587/ |url-status=live }}

Background

{{Further|Drake–Kendrick Lamar feud}}

The Drake–Kendrick Lamar feud is a rap feud between American artist Kendrick Lamar and Canadian artist Drake which escalated in early 2024. Metro Boomin became closely involved in the feud after he, Lamar and Future released the song "Like That" in March 2024 which further escalated the conflict.{{Cite magazine |last=Gee |first=Andre |date=2024-03-25 |title=Drake Replies to Kendrick Lamar's 'Like That' Diss -- Sort Of |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/drake-replies-to-kendrick-lamar-diss-1234993802/ |access-date=2024-05-24 |magazine=Rolling Stone |archive-date=2024-04-24 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240424054812/https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/drake-replies-to-kendrick-lamar-diss-1234993802/ |url-status=live }} In April 2024, Drake would release the song "Push Ups", in which he directly dismisses Metro's involvement in the feud with the line "Metro shut your hoe ass up and make some drums".{{Cite web |last=Davis |first=Wes |date=2024-04-16 |title=Drake muddies the "Push Ups" AI debate with a deepfake |url=https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/16/24132145/drake-ai-deepfake-diss-track-metro-boomin-drumline |access-date=2024-05-24 |website=The Verge |archive-date=2024-05-12 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240512181922/https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/16/24132145/drake-ai-deepfake-diss-track-metro-boomin-drumline |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |last=Montgomery |first=Sarah Jasmine |date=2024-04-13 |title=Drake Diss Track Aimed at Kendrick Lamar, Metro Boomin, and More Surfaces: Fans Debate If It's Real |url=https://www.complex.com/music/a/sarah_jasmine_montgomery/drake-kendrick-lamar-diss-leaks-online |access-date=2024-05-23 |website=Complex |language=en-us |archive-date=2024-04-13 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240413231639/https://www.complex.com/music/a/sarah_jasmine_montgomery/drake-kendrick-lamar-diss-leaks-online |url-status=live }} In the song "Family Matters", Drake further antagonizes Metro, directly calling him out in the song once again.{{Cite web |last=Deville |first=Chris |date=2024-05-04 |title=Drake Unveils Latest Kendrick Lamar Diss Track "Family Matters" |url=https://www.stereogum.com/2262209/drake-unveils-latest-kendrick-lamar-diss-track-family-matters/music/ |access-date=2024-05-24 |website=Stereogum |archive-date=2024-05-24 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240524000642/https://www.stereogum.com/2262209/drake-unveils-latest-kendrick-lamar-diss-track-family-matters/music/ |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |last=Strauss |first=Matthew |date=2024-05-04 |title=Drake Fires Back at Kendrick Lamar on New Song "Family Matters" |url=https://pitchfork.com/news/drake-fires-back-at-kendrick-lamar-on-new-song-family-matters-listen/ |access-date=2024-05-24 |website=Pitchfork |archive-date=2024-05-24 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240524000642/https://pitchfork.com/news/drake-fires-back-at-kendrick-lamar-on-new-song-family-matters-listen/ |url-status=live }}

Rick Ross coined the phrase BBL Drizzy, ironizing about a rumor that Drake received plastic surgery on his abs and on his nose, using the slang term "BBL", which is an acronym to Brazilian butt lift. Drake referred to Ross's involvement in the feud in the song "Push Ups" also, rapping: "Can't believe he jumpin' in, this nigga turnin' 50 / Every song that made it on the chart, he got from Drizzy / Spend that lil' check you got and stay up out my business". Ross responded with his diss "Champagne Moments", coining the phrase BBL Drizzy on X (formerly known as Twitter) and Instagram while promoting the song.{{Cite magazine |last=Saponara |first=Michael |date=2024-04-16 |title=Rick Ross Brings Drake Diss Track 'Champagne Moments' to Streaming Services: Listen |url=https://www.billboard.com/music/rb-hip-hop/rick-ross-drake-diss-track-champagne-moments-streaming-1235657928/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240430003529/https://www.billboard.com/music/rb-hip-hop/rick-ross-drake-diss-track-champagne-moments-streaming-1235657928/ |archive-date=2024-04-30 |access-date=2024-05-28 |magazine=Billboard |language=en-US}}{{Cite magazine |last=Saponara |first=Michael |date=2024-04-15 |title=A Timeline of Drake & Rick Ross' Relationship: Collabs, Feuds & A Lost Joint Album |url=https://www.billboard.com/lists/drake-rick-ross-relationship-timeline-feuds-collabs/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240512183026/https://www.billboard.com/lists/drake-rick-ross-relationship-timeline-feuds-collabs/ |archive-date=2024-05-12 |access-date=2024-05-24 |magazine=Billboard}} Inspired by an X post from Rick Ross, comedic performer Willonius Hatcher, who goes by King Willonius online, released an AI generated R&B parody song titled "BBL Drizzy". Release

On May 5, 2024, Metro responded to Drake's diss on "Family Matters" on X and released an instrumental titled "BBL DRIZZY 150 BPM.mp3" on SoundCloud, sampling "BBL Drizzy", a comedic R&B song by King Willonius. Unbeknownst to Metro at the time, the original track's vocals and instrumental were generated entirely by an artificial intelligence model. In addition to the release of the beat, Metro also announced that he would hold a contest on social media for whoever could produce the best freestyle rap over the beat, with the winner receiving a beat from him for free.{{Cite magazine |last=Saponara |first=Michael |date=2024-05-06 |title=Metro Boomin Responds to Drake's Disses & Hosts 'BBL Drizzy' Beat Giveaway |url=https://www.billboard.com/music/rb-hip-hop/metro-boomin-response-drake-bbl-drizzy-beat-giveaway-1235674318/ |access-date=2024-05-24 |magazine=Billboard |archive-date=2024-05-07 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240507004313/https://www.billboard.com/music/rb-hip-hop/metro-boomin-response-drake-bbl-drizzy-beat-giveaway-1235674318/ |url-status=live }} Users on social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram and X were quick to react, releasing their own takes on the track shortly after.{{Cite web |last=Cline |first=Georgette |date=2024-05-09 |title=20 of the Best Entries for Metro Boomin's 'BBL Drizzy' Beat Giveaway |url=https://www.xxlmag.com/metro-boomin-bbl-drizzy-beat-giveaway-entries/ |access-date=2024-05-24 |website=XXL |archive-date=2024-05-13 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240513205338/https://www.xxlmag.com/metro-boomin-bbl-drizzy-beat-giveaway-entries/ |url-status=live }} On May 6, Metro announced that he would also give the winner a $10,000 prize, and a runner-up would also receive a beat.{{Cite web |last=Coleman II |first=C. =Use of artificial intelligence=

"BBL Drizzy" prompted widespread discussion regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence to create art and music. It is the first notable example of an AI generated song being used as a sample in commercial music production. The acceptance of the song by the general public despite controversies surrounding AI art has prompted discussion regarding potential ramifications of a growth in commercial music utilizing AI.{{cite news |last1=Park |first1=Gene |date=2024-05-14 |title=A song about Drake's butt might be a real breakthrough for AI art |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/music/2024/05/14/bbl-drizzy-king-willonius-kendrick-drake/ |access-date=2024-05-15 |newspaper=The Washington Post |archive-date=2024-05-15 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240515030803/https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/music/2024/05/14/bbl-drizzy-king-willonius-kendrick-drake/ |url-status=live }}
