Early life
Rosen was born in Los Angeles, California, as the son of a bassoonist and organist. He was taught piano by his mother, starting from the age of three. At the age of fifteen, he joined the onstage band for the Los Angeles production of 13. He moved to New York at the age of seventeen to make his Broadway debut in 13, where he was a swing.{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/28/theater/28simo.html|title=Making the Band, the Broadway Version, in the Musical '13'|last=Simonson|first=Robert|date=September 24, 2008|work=The New York Times|access-date=November 30, 2019|language=en-US|issn=0362-4331}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.theatermania.com/new-york-city-theater/news/charlie-rosen-brings-the-big-band-back-to-broadway_67307.html|title=Charlie Rosen Brings the Big Band Back to Broadway|last=Gordon|first=David|date=January 26, 2014|website=TheaterMania|language=en-US|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191201202756/https://www.theatermania.com/new-york-city-theater/news/charlie-rosen-brings-the-big-band-back-to-broadway_67307.html|archive-date=December 1, 2019|access-date=December 1, 2019}} He later attended Berklee College of Music for four semesters.
Career

Rosen began his professional career as a swing musician for the bass, guitar, and percussion tracks of 13. Starting in 2012,{{Cite web|url=http://www.playbill.com/article/nick-blaemire-caissie-levy-santino-fontana-and-more-set-for-charlie-rosens-broadway-big-band-nyc-debut-concert-com-199694|title=Nick Blaemire, Caissie Levy, Santino Fontana and More Set for Charlie Rosen's Broadway Big Band NYC Debut Concert|last=Gioia|first=Michael|date=November 12, 2012|website=Playbill|language=en|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210420110444/https://www.playbill.com/article/nick-blaemire-caissie-levy-santino-fontana-and-more-set-for-charlie-rosens-broadway-big-band-nyc-debut-concert-com-199694 |archive-date=April 20, 2021 |access-date=December 1, 2019}} he was the bandleader of Charlie Rosen's Broadway Big Band, where he arranged classic musical theater numbers into music that could be performed by a jazz orchestra with Broadway performers as the vocalists. {{As of|2019|April}}, he primarily features as a guitarist in the Broadway musical Be More Chill.
Rosen can play about 70 musical instruments including the "flugelbone", melodica, Fender Rhodes, and theremin. Of these he has described the flugelbone as his "orchestrating secret weapon" due to its ability to utilize variety of timbres. However, he considers himself primarily a bassist but uses the range of instruments in his repertoire to improve the quality of the music he is able to create.
In 2017, Rosen founded the 8-Bit Big Band, a jazz and pops orchestra, in which he serves as the director.{{cite news |last=Olson |first=Eric |title=Video games meet big band jazz at Seattle's Benaroya Hall |work=The Seattle Times |date=2024-08-26 |url=https://www.seattletimes.com/entertainment/music/video-games-meet-big-band-jazz-at-seattles-benaroya-hall/ |access-date=2024-12-08 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241006010002/https://www.seattletimes.com/entertainment/music/video-games-meet-big-band-jazz-at-seattles-benaroya-hall/ |archive-date=2024-10-06 |url-status=live }} The band won a Grammy Award for an arrangement for the song "Meta Knight's Revenge", from the game Kirby Super Star{{nbsp}}(1996), in 2022,{{cite news |last=Rossignol |first=Derrick |title=A song from a 26-year-old Kirby game is Nintendo's first Grammy win |work=Uproxx |date=2022-04-04 |url=https://uproxx.com/music/kirby-2022-grammys-nintendo-meta-knight-super-star/ |access-date=2024-12-08 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240529222458/https://uproxx.com/music/kirby-2022-grammys-nintendo-meta-knight-super-star/ |archive-date=2024-05-29 |url-status=live }} and were nominated again in 2024.{{cite news |last=van der Velde |first=Issy |title=Persona 5 jazz cover nominated against Willow Smith and John Legend at Grammys 2025 |work=NME |date=2024-11-12 |url=https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/persona-5-jazz-cover-nominated-against-willow-smith-and-john-legend-at-grammys-2025-3811840 |access-date=2024-12-08 |archive-date=November 16, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241116150919/https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/persona-5-jazz-cover-nominated-against-willow-smith-and-john-legend-at-grammys-2025-3811840 |url-status=live }}
