In relation to the national road network, the E90 currently follows the A2 motorway (Egnatia Odos) for the entire duration.[https://ia37rg02wpsa01.blob.core.windows.net/fek/15/2015/20151500253.pdf Ministerial Decision DOY/oik/5776/2015] (FEK AAP' 253/21.12.2015, pp. 2101–2102). The Egnatia Odos was named after Via Egnatia, a Roman-era trail from the Adriatic to the Aegean that was built by Macedonian proconsul Gnaeus Egnatius: the Roman road was later extended to Byzantium (Constantinople) to the east and Rome to the west.{{Cite journal|last=Jog|first=Gauri M.|last2=Brilakis|first2=Ioannis K.|last3=Angelides|first3=Demos C.|date=2011-07-01|title=Testing in harsh conditions: Tracking resources on construction sites with machine vision|url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0926580510001822|journal=Automation in Construction|language=en|volume=20|issue=4|pages=328–337|doi=10.1016/j.autcon.2010.11.003|issn=0926-5805}}
